For a start I like copycat stuff and Spector was really an ideas man. He was NOT a songwriter apart from half a dozen early songs by the Teddy Bears. The Press keep saying he was a songwriter but his name in the credits was a "courtesy credit" as he had the name to launch songs by new writers. As far as being a "producer" goes it means nothing to me.And I wonder whether he had to explain to the jury just what a producer does? George Martin he wasn't and what he did anybody could have done. Spector owes his entire career to Carol Connors-who fortunately was his opposite and even before that the idea of the Teddy Bears came from an act only 6 months old at the time-The AQUATONES.White doowoppers with a girl lead. His next job of copying what was going was the Spectors 3-here it was the Fleetwoods. After the Crystals were launched in the vein of the Chantels the man "worked" for Leiber & Stoller and began to steal their ideas. But that's okay like I said I love copycats and the late Frank Guida reckoned he'd copied HIS ideas. Not sure whether he did as he never mentioned Gary U S Bonds but then again Spector gave no one credit-not even the Beatles for rescuing his flagging career. Spector's next move was THEFT.He stole the Gene Pitney demo for He's A Rebel-which Vikki Carr was already recording. Her superior version topped the charts in Australia. You could write a book about Phil Spector-in fact 3 already have done! I read them all and came to the conclusion that either he's insane or I am! Personally I thought he'd have got the reduced charge of manslaughter-but there it is-in less than 2 months he gets sentenced and it'll be a wakeup call for him when he has no bodyguards! Phil was always after publicity. Now he's got it in reams |

Phil has been sentenced at last-he won't be considered for parole until he's in his mid 80s. Probably he'll get isolation for his own safety-there must be a lot who'd want to bump him off. All I can say is that for a man who had the World in his palm he blew it all for reasons best known to himself. Meanwhile the one who made him a star-Carol Connors-is one of the biggest media personalities in America. And the Aquatones recently did a cover of To know him is to love him http://groups.yahoo.com/group/highschoolpoppers Mostly girl singers of the 60s plus Beatles, instrumentals,a few guys |
