My late husband told me this story about his grandfather. His grandfather named Joe lived in Sainte Marie de Kent when he was young and he told my husband that when he was little they were so poor that their mother made them wear rags wrapped around their feet instead of shoes , and when they had a new pair of shoes or mocassins they had to make them last as long as possible. So each time they walked to Bouctouche and back, they would walk barefeet carrying their shoes or boots, when they would get on the outskirts of Bouctouche they would put on their shoes, and when they left to return home, as soon as they were out of Bouctouche , off went the shoes again. Can you imagine how poor they were? It is sort of sad in a way to read this , but the moral of this story is they had to make do with what they had in order to survive.
