My father always told me that the Williams line were descendents of William the Conqueror, and he truly believed that. Now at the centre d'etude the story is that the first Williams, was really a cabin boy who jumped ship in Cocagne and hid in the hayloft of Joseph Goguen founder of Cocagne and an important man. Mr Goguen found him in the hayloft and asked him his name, the boy could not speak french so he said his name was William and he came from Bristol England, so Joseph Goguen took him as his own, had him baptized under Mathurin for the missionary who baptized him, Guillaume for William and Bristol for where he came from. Thus Mathurin Guillaume Bristol became to be. Now My great grandfather was born under Bristol, married under Williams. Now how true is this story? Was he really a cabin boy? I havent found no record of his baptism either.
