You must have heard stories about Scrubwomen, and Midwives? A scrubwoman would sometimes go to houses and scrub their floors for a fee. In those days , the people were very poor and they had to survive any way they could. Some did housework ,as did my grandmother for many many years. She had a big family and was widowed so she did housework. Now my mother told me that when she was newly married, they built a log home and the floors were all wood, and she said she would get on her knees and scrub until the wood was white. She said that she also wallpapered her walls with old newspapers and she would make the glue out of water and flour. She said that the nuns would come by for their regular visit and they would compliment her on how nice her house looked. And as for midwives, my Mom also assisted at some births , when the doctor could not make it. Back then the doctors would usually come to the house no matter how bad the weather was, unless there was no way. So the women would contact my Mom to go and help with the deliveries. And my Dad helped my Mom with the birth of my sister. Boy it must have been hard back then compared to now. We are very lucky not to have to go through what our parents and grandparents went through.

My Brother, Mike, sent me a link to your site yesterday. I have been reading articles on your site. Totally amazing. When I found this message board, I had to smile, then comment. My mother, Your late Aunt Irene, used to tell me about how our grand mother would have to work as a scrubwoman to get enough money to feed the family after our grandfather passed away. I, sadly, do not know many relatives on my mothers side of the family. I do remember going to the Old Peoples Home in Shediac to visit my grandmother. I would go with mother and Aunt Minnie. As crippled up as our grand mother was, I still remember the beautiful work she did crocheting. I still have some items that she made, that mom gave me. She was a remarkable lady who worked hard for her family. I do hope you will post more pictures of this family. I would love to learn more.
