Author Topic:   BEST VENUE IN PLYMPTON?
CHRIS posted 6/16/08 3:53 PM
Hello folks. Just to let you know we will no longer be playing at the Brook in Plympton. All the staff there are great and have been good to us, as have the punters and those that have supported us...we salute you!! Thanks to each and every one of you, it was a pleasure meeting you. But (yep, there's always a 'but') the manager is 'at odds' with us. It started off with volume (too loud, too quiet, too this, too that), kit issues, no time to set up or prepare but the clincher occurred when we had to cancel two gigs. The first one was when I was very ill (some of you may remember). I was in a bad way for several weeks and went to hospital (two hospitals actually!)- and she didn't get off my back even then, the morning I went to hospital. The second gig we gave 8 weeks notice and reminded them in person nearer the time AS WELL!!! What more can we do...??? In three years we've only ever cancelled two gigs (out of over 150)...and never, ever, ever, ever, a function - no way! One of the band members partners receievd a load of abuse over the phone from the manager...not on really, that's just plain silly. Personally I think she's just upset about her weight - but takes it out on everyone else...'get some exercise!!'. She wants all the benefits a band brings(i.e. the supporters we have and punters turning up/staying and buying a ton of beer) but would rather have all that business and not have the band play...you can't have it both ways. As such it is no longer an option...(I know other bands are experiencing similar problems with this venue, or rather, manager). There is a saviour though! Yep, it's called, 'The Barcode', Chaddlewood. it's trendier, it's in a good location, the management are very pro live music and supportive of those who follow bands. There's another pub close by, cashpoints, parking, takeaways and everthing you need for a night out. From now on this will be 'THE' Plympton venue, it's a clear winner ...BARCODE...hope to see you all there at the next gig. Lots of new tracks going in. The band are working hard on a new set and new ideas ready for the summer. Rock on!!!

Sorry mate but i think you are well out of order...............you forgot to mention that the beer is cheaper at the Barcode as well......and as we all know it makes the beers taste nicer.....

the place has gone to the dogs mate. You are better off without it. She is just a pain in the ass. Puts all the bands through the same shit. No appreiciation for the effort you all put in. also hear that 'Joker' and 'The vibes' have gone through the same problems....one solution...bin them!

I agree with everything you lot said.I said ram it too - and that was the first time.

good on ya paul.....we all put too much effort into this to be treated as an inconvineince.......if they don't want us to make noise or bring lights or hang backdrops or bring large crowds of people to spend loads of money in their pub, then the answer is simple...DONT PRETEND TO BE A LIVE VENUE AND BOOK BANDS..........especially when there are so many other plymouth venues...(including plympton for that matter...i.e. the barcode) doing it far better....

Thank God it's not just me!!! Didn't realise so many bands had the same problem with the Brook...what's going on!!

Totally agree with Lee's comments. You see, i've heard that the bar manager and landlady (who is cool) are new to this pub game. Apparently they were in the restaurant business. This would explain why they have no idea of the time/effort that bands put into performing. All pubs/clubs nationwide ae losing money as the credit crunch kicks in...there are loads of pubs in Plympton alone that have gone to the wall. If the Brook starts losing many more decent bands their days are numbered. How the hell they have managed as a live venue for so long is a miracle to me...crap layout, crap manager. Their only saving grace is that there are not many live venues to feed the densely populated over inflated housing estate that is Plympton...oh i forgot..its a twat of a place to get a taxi from as well. Last year i had to queue to get in and see Joker play....I reckon if Hatti Jacques keeps moaning at the bands they wont even be playing there anymore. Rusty Anchor...you don't need the Brook!

Weel, to be fair i used to gig the Brook over 15 years ago, and it was shit then!! What you gonna do....let those sad c*nts get on with their sad existences and move on to venues that are way more suited to loads of punters and live music. Should have firebombed the place when i was there- wish i had now ha ha!!!Might still!! Hope i get arrested for terrorist charges thatll teach them...
we love Rusty Angels! posted 6/25/08 6:31 PM
That's shit you've had lots of grief from someone who clearly doesn't appreciate an awesome band when she hears one!! Really enjoyed watching you play there but you play good anywhere!

Nice one boys :) Get this, when I met the land lady I offered a nice smile and said hello only to be told in no uncertain terms; "now look, dont make any noise until after the restaurant is closed, the restaurant makes the money here you see, the bands don't". I can sling my kit back in the car luv if you want, its no sweat really!!! Unbelieveable - not that I'm bitter, pisses me off though, as a drummer its a lot of effort you know.Anyhoo, gonna catch you guys on the 4th at the Junction, perhaps have a beer if you have time :)CheersPaul
