hey guys, are there any cool groups or events at your school? I'm just starting an advocacy committee on campus, and we're sort of stuck for ideas. |

I came across this post in the Grand Rapids, MI livejournal community - http://community.livejournal.com/grandrapidsmi/724767.htmlwith commentary and pictures. I couldn't go myself, but it looks like there was a good turnout. |

What NOT to do: Don't go around handing out bananas with notes stuck to them about the terrible working conditions on banana plantations. People will start calling you the Guilt Club and hate you forever. At least that's what happened to us! Pick issues that people CAN do something about...like fair trade coffee or foreign aid. You could check out a guide for groups like yours called "Just Basics", website below. http://www.crcna.org/pages/osjha_justbasics.cfm |

gerda,I totally hear you!! it is so easy to fall into "pointing the finger" if you will....i remember once being so frustrated that no one would stop by our letter writing table on genocide that i started yelling at those who ignored us "apathy is the leading cause of death in our world today"...as you can imagine it didn't make anyone want to write a letter. Maybe we could start a somewhat comedic forum of justice organizing do's and dont's...the bananas were fabulous in that same way. |

you know, I just always hated stopping by tables in the student center anyway. maybe I'm just a freakish recluse, but I need to look over materials on my own time, with my own space, not with an anxious car-salesman-type activist pressing me to sign something or spouting facts at me while I'm trying to read through literature. I'm cool with trying to raise awareness, but I'd be far more likely to browse through and take materials at an unstaffed table. much less pressure, and if I have questions there's always contact information in the brochures. |

I know they're kind of empty now, but we're starting a new section on Micah Morphosis for colleges - eventually, we hope to have the current activities of each posted school regularly updated, so that people can share their good ideas; high school students can scope out the social justice flavor of different schools; and there's lots of good networking going on. If you attend a college with an active social justice program, we want to hear from you! Email me at kraleym@crcna.org. |

At Fuller, we're hoping to pull off several events around World AIDS Day on Dec. 1st that will pull together many of our "concerns" committees, including Arts, Peace and Justice and Missions. We'll probably focus our Advent chapel around HIV/AIDS, set up tables around campus for the purpose of education, and also hope to have some sort of moving installation on campus for a local AIDS walk that passes through campus. Is anyone else out there planning on doing something for WAD? |
