I wonder who came up with the bright idea that member-owners should live here at least 5 years before they can serve on the board. Most times when a member has lived here for five years they get a chance to see the clicks and favortism that goes on here and are usually turned off by it all. We need people to serve on the board with the enthusiasm that newcomers have as well as the older members. When members are intervieved by the membership committee. They are informed of the various committees we have and are encouraged to join. All usually say that they would, but never do. It makes logical sense to request that one is familiar with the workings of HS, by participating on a committee before they run for the board. HS is not a unique co-op. We have issues and goals like all others. So why would a few people make rules to discriminate against members from running for a officer on the board if they have not lived here for five years? Is the new rule designed to keep some members who might be in opposition with some of the old board members ideas? We need new idea and new people to express them. The world has changed drastically since my moving into HS some 39 years ago. The buildings were new and people were excited and enthusiastic about living here. Committes had many members.Jobs were plentiful and the cost of living was manageable. This building is old and falling apart, mostly because preventative maintanance was not addressed properly. We are now passing on another morgage to our grandchildren. This is not fair. Election promises of (no raises) have prevented cost that would have saved us in the long run. I am paying 8 times as much carrying charges as to when I first moved in here. Nickle and dime raises have cost us all. My understanding of the boards purpose was to oversee the operations of HS not dictate to the management company that we hire for their expertise. I know of no person who has served on any board who can sucessfully run the coop.alone. Siminars are held for board members to help, inform ,share cooperative living and to prevent mistakes that other co-ops make . Don't let five members who happen to be on the board tell us (the members) the amount of years a person lives here before they can run for the board. Remember the 3/4 majority RULE.
