Has anybody had experience with gifted kids doing really well in elementary and secondary school and then falling apart in university? I was informed recently of a student who was bored, didn't hand in assignments, lacked interest in subjects. In general, the work ethic almost disappeared, goals and objectives in life became unclear.Any thoughts on the subject? Any solutions to suggest?

Hi Otto,I'm familiar with you from ABC-Peel. I know this is a really old post, but wanted to add my two cents worth to you.Yes, I have seen first hand many bright and very gifted students have issues in University. I am thinking of two in particular. Both did very well in high school. One went to Sciences at MacMaster and failed a course in first year. As she had to sit out a year (you probably know that rule)and she NEVER went back. I think this shook her confidence to the very core of her being. I say this as she was my brother's GF and then became his wife. So in the 17 years I knew her feel that I knew her pretty well to make this assesment. The second person, never failed anything in his academic life until he got to Queens and failed an assignment. He was very distraught over this. However, he managed to put it behind him and went on to finish his degree and go to law school and he is practicing law. My personal take on this is that many gifted kids who were once at the top of their school and now with all the best of the best from all over. The competition is tough and for many this is may be the first time they have been with others like them. Not to say that they weren't with lots of other smart kids but now they may be with other kids who are as smart as or smarter than they are. This can be a real shock to these kids. Feel free to contact me.Lori
