What pace, distance and how many riders, generally, do the Sunday club run at the moment? I'm looking for steady group rides with a cafe stop. But no burn ups, should steady and enjoyable for the whole ride.Ta muchly.

There will be a small group of us starting a Saturday ride soon.Mid morning start, around 55 miles, average 15 or 16mph with at least one stop for a brew. Ideally no more than 4 hours.Expect to start mid Oct to early Nov and continue till spring.I will put a post on the forum when we have a date if youre interested

The sunday runs seem to have increased in popularity lately. Last one i went on there were about 10 riders. Distance usually 60ish miles with an average of about 16mph. Good time of year to give it a try now the racing season is over and everyone is easing off. For the ideal newbies clubrun, try the one on the 5th oct to the club hillclimb. It's only 20 miles steady each way with a cafe stop, usually well turned out and you don't have to ride the hillclimb if you don't want.

what sort of time do you have in mind for the saturday training run? only reason I ask is that I would like to come along but work may mean I cant unless the start/meet time is late enough....

So the club runs are on a Sunday morning, setting off at about 1030? 16mph for 60 miles, with a cafe stop; so a smidge over 4 hours?

No the club runs are at 9am on Sunday from the Palm Court - Dave is suggesting a slower run on Sunday starting at 10.30, this is in addition to the group that go from the little chef at 9 on Sunday (if they still do that) and the occasional 8am Sunday runs some of us arrange on here. Hope that clarifies things.

So, If I turn up at where the Palm Court used to be, at 9AM on a SUNDAY morning, I should stand a fair chance of meeting other riders intending to do a traditional club run ride?

I reckon so MarkWith the Offical 9am run, the unofficial 10.30am 'slower' run and the Little Chef 9am run, there should be plenty for everyone - regardless of your sleep requirments. The good think with this lot is that if you are late for one of the 9am ones, you get a second bite of the cherry.

Is the ride that starts from the Little Chef on a Sunday morning a ride for the faster racing lads type of thing?

I think they like to keep it a secret.

Dont you just love this sport - secret cycle rides!

Just want to make it clear that the 9am ride is the traditional club run. Steady pace, riding in pairs, leisurely cafe stop, no-one gets left behind (contrary to what some have said). If you want to get back earlier, or take a flatter route back to avoid that final hill then you're welcome to ride out with us, we won't be offended if you choose not to do the full ride. Definately not a chaingang, anyone attacking will be educated otherwise. Not to say that we don't have a little fun sprinting for the occasional village sign before sitting up, waiting and regrouping. Likewise hills are often best ridden at your own pace with a full regroup at the top. Pace and distance is very dependant upon who comes out so if there are no novices then yes we might end up sticking a few more miles on and going at what's steady for the fitter riders, but not if there are novices out. It's social ride, definately not a chaingang. Cheers, Clive.

Just for the record, the Little Eaton Sunday ride is not a secret, but as it is not a Derby Merc club ride as such, so you won't see it advertised anywhere. It is just a group of mates who regularly go out together. It goes out to Elton and back using a very similar route every week, so is only abut 50 miles. Pace is slightly quicker than club run I would say, but hardly electric these days. Usually home at 12 - 12:30. If you like the A6, the via Gellia, and getting half-wheeled by Andy Hands every other week, then this could be the run for you!

For the record, Clive is right. I am a terrible climber and am often dropped on the longer climbs, but the faster men slow down at the top and wait till I catch up. More than once someone has turned back to make sure I am still alive.

And as we are all going on the record, the proposed (by me) run at 10:30 on a Sunday is simply there for those of us who need more sleep on a Sunday.
