Bugger, the only hope I would ever have of getting my hands on a trophy - the down hill one obviously, no peddling!!!! - forget the hill climb and turn up in full aero kit, skinsuit, aero wheels, tape over water battle holes, tape vents up on aero helmet, adopt superman position, jettison water bottle ballasts once I hit the flat section, etc ;-) and it gets planned for the same day that I'm going to be racing Sean Kelly up the cat & fiddle!!! ;-(

I don't think they are because I've seen a pic of Kelly riding it without - I wont be wearing one for it if I ride anyway.

No, some of my mates didn't wear them last year! Are you thinking of the weight saving! ;-)

The secret to winning the freewheel is to take your chain off. No friction on the rear freewheel cogset. Also no one can accuse you of cheating by peddling. Oh yes and then weaving your font wheel on the flat bit. Think that was banned though after I won it last. It is possible to get to the ford on the little road to Tissington, some 4+miles from the start this way. That's if it still starts at Longcliffe. Some of the old boys used to put bricks in their saddle bags too ; ) no tell a lie, it was stodgy fruit cake, weights about the same and they could legitimately get away with it as it was for sustenance later in the day.

Not wanting to encourage riders to injure them selves or inspect a dry stone wall at speed, but the other secret which may seem obvious is not to use your brakes at all. From what I remember there is one right hand bend as you go into the wooded section where you may be tempted. It was always damp at this time of year and you could feel your front wheel just starting to lose grip.

So what time does the hill climb start and where are people meeting ?Also, if you enter an open event do you need to tell anyone in the club the result ?

The clubrun is riding out to the hillclimb at 9am from what was Palm Court (by the roundabout at the A38/A6 junction N of city centre). Hillclimb itself is on Pistern hill just S of exit from Calke Abbey on road to Ashby at 11am. You don't "need" to tell anyone before or after you ride an open. It does help though if you want your results to be counted for the club competitions, like the various Best All Rounder (BAR) categories, if you let me know. Odd's are even if you don't I'll find out though and post it with the rest of the results as most are on the CTT site.
