Lets try putting some sugestions together on this thread on what we could do to try and attract some younger riders. By younger, we mean anything from 8 year olds to 18 year olds.

I'll start the ball rolling by suggesting a poster campaign in the local schools, maybe something in the local press advertising maybe an open evening at the club room. What about arranging and advertising via the poster campaign a reliabiltiy trial over short distance for say under 16's or something. I'd certainly be prepared to give my time to help this project. Maybe we could get some ce?rtificates or something for riders who complete it. I'm only talking maybe a 10 or 15 mile reliability trial. Any furher idea's or suggestions

Got to rush out now but there are issues to do with working with kids these days - CRB checks etc etc - nto saying nothing can be done but it would take genuine commitment from a few people. A start would be getting a few more Level 1 and 2 coaches in the club as they are then insured by BC to work with kids.

I was just having a look at your website and spotted this post. If you are thinking of setting up a youth section I would suggest contacting Rob Sharman who is the BC GO-ride coach for Derbyshire (Yes the same Rob Sharman who is an Elite road racer and ridews for Sigma Sport) via BC HQ.We recently set up a youth section and have had an encouraging response and now have about 8 regulars coming along every week. You will need at least one person to go on a coaching course. Our club funds this but we can reclaim 90% of the cost from the County and brough Councils.

We know Rob and Tom is already a BC Coach.Tom, there are CRB issues but hopefully these will soon be sorted with the new ISA system - much more straight forward!None of this answers the more significant issue of what would we offer to a new 8, 9 or 10 year old member. They certainly wont be doing the Tuesday eve training ride and probably already participate in the Cyclo-cross at weekends. Maybe we need to put the horse before the cart here and first of all identify a programme of regular activities for younger members. Build the programme and they will come - where have I heard that before?

I am willing and keen to put myself forward for any project that may encourage younger riders into the sport. I would be prepared to do the coaching course and or other activities that may encourage new comers into cycling in the region. I am contactable direct at steve_kilgannon@hotmail.com.

I intend jacking in organising the road race next year for a couple of years at least - hopefully someone else will take it on for a turn - I wouldn't mind working towards us becoming a GoRide club then and was going to get together with anyone interested to discuss it and put something to the committee or AGM - just really do need to get this weekends RR out of the way.

I have 8 year old son and want to get him cycling, as I think this type of sport would suit him. However I am not sure of best way to get him involved. I was thinking about the cyclocross but was also wondering why clubs don't have a scaled down time trial for the kids during the summer. If they did, I would want to ride escort to him to provide some sort of protect to him on the roads. Alternatively some sort of weekend ride would be good

Simon, both very good and plausable ideas. Please see thread re meeting about promoting the club to younger riders and what we can do to offer them something. I like you have a 9 year old son who's just taken up cycling. I'm keen to see if we can maybe attract a small group of younger riders.

If Dave Lowe is still a member perhaps you should speak to him as his boys are a model of how to bring yongsters into the sport. Personally I was very impressed with the youth element at the DMRC and SPRC cyclo cross events. The problem is ensuring the safety of youngsters from every angle especially riding on the road. Is there a simple flat road circuit venue in derby that could be used for youngsters at no expense in the summer?

Steve - decide a venue and I'll come along. Nothing lost by talking about it - others clubs do stuff so no reason we shouldn't - needn't be anything too ambitious or time consuming.

Tom - Whats the name of that pub in Darley Abbey down by the river near the club room ? Does that sound like a suitable venue for a pint and a chat on what we can do ? How does Weds 1st sound ? Say 8.00pm ? Let me know, and i'll post the details on the other thread about the meeting

Just a thought about possible sites suitable for young riders. Why not use a large car park when its not in use in the evening or weekends. There must several possible sites around Derby. Alternatively ask someone at Heanor Clarion about the old American Adventure car park that they used for the circuit racing during the summer.

Peter T, thats a great idea. I live near asda spondon, which has a big car park with a road right round it. It would be perfect. Sunday evening would be the only option, as the store is only closed then. If we could lauch some initiative for kids racing, maybe we could approach asda to allow us to use it as a event. I'd take that on and speak to the manager.
