I am new to barefoot trimming. I have had a backyard horse or two all my 41 yrs and only trail ride, but ride ALOT! I have watched farriers shoe my horses all my life and always wished I had the back and muscles for shoeing. I currently have two TN Walkers/Spotted Saddle horses that have had shoes all their lives, 10 and 7 yrs each. For the last 6 years an Amish farrier did my horses, and I NEVER had a loose shoe or thrown shoe and I only shoed every 10 wks! I thought my horses feet were great and I was set. Then he stopped shoeing and I couldn't find a good farrier I liked and did a proper job, so I pulled the shoes myself as of April 15, 2005 and one of my horses has been barefoot since then. I have read alot of websites about trimming and have started the white line stradegy. I would appreciate any help and suggestions. I will post more later.

Hi Dawn .. You might be interested, then, in attending an online course that begins this coming Thursday, Sept. 22 (tomorrow!) on Natural Hoofcare. It's affordable and the amount of information in this course is amazing. It's both live classes and printed material from the site which you print out and keep for as long as you which for reference. You can attend all classes for 10 weeks, once a week, or go at your own pace. General care of the natural horse including feed & nutrition, environment, Hoof Anatomy, Functioning, Form, Trimming, etc. Go to my website http://www.thepenzancehorse.com and click on "Online Courses" ... you'll find NHC101 courses there and instructions for registering. :) -- Gwen

I am also new to the barefoot trimming. I have three horses, two are adult quarter horses who were shod for most of their lives, 12 & 13. I have a two year old Freisian colt, and though he has always been barefoot, I am concerned about the barefoot farrier knowing how to trim him. Will it be a different procedure for the Freisian than the quarter horses, or will she just follow the same procedure?

Hi Jane! Welcome. :) Your farrier should have a basic set of guidelines for natural hoof trim that s/he can individualize to each horse, each hoof. The gen. rule of the back 2/3rds of the hoof being weight bearing is standard for all. The shorter toes, Mustang rolls, heels trimmed so frogs have passive/active contact, etc ... those are pretty much standard but highly individualized to the specific hoof. Hopefully your farrier is able to read the soles and the landmarks of the hooves for each one of your guys. Let us know how it goes! :) Gwen
