Well another Blues Foundation International Blues Challenge has come and gone.
Last weekend was one for the record books .
I don't envy the judges ,they had and outstanding field of Blues bands to judge and it wasn't an easy job.
When it comes down to judging talent ,the old saying,"beauty is in the eye of the beholder comes to mind, after hearing the results of this years competition I was in shock. I wondered if the judges were at the same venues I was . If so they evidently saw things differently from me
I guess I should give credence to the assertion that cultural background, age and life experiences form your opinions as to what is exceptional and what is just marginal
yeah their were a lot of excellent players ,yeah many had professional presentations many knew exactly how to deliver their Blues message to the masses, but there were also excellent players who couldn't sing, there were singers who seemed to have just barely begun to master their instruments .But above all we had an excellent time heard a lot of GOOD BLUES
Like it or not the Blues Foundation is in the forefront of preserving the Blues and cultivating the next crop of Blues men and women so it stands to reason that the the judges scoring reflect their lifestyles and taste which are different from mine.
The definition of what is true Blues is determined by the powers that be and the judges understanding of the Blues . So if we assert that the judges don't have a clue as to what Blues really is ,or what the Blues should be
we either have to get involved and strive to have our views and musical tastes recognized or start our own thing to recognize those who we feel are outstanding artist.
With that I say Congratulations to the winners enjoy your success.
