Wow! I just watched the special on Public Television and was totally amazed...amazed at what I heard, the history, the written music, the singing...and also amazed that I spent 4 years getting a bachelor of arts degree in music (circa 1969) and had never been exposed to this rich history. What a shame! I'm writing to the music department of my Alma Mater and insisting they at least include it in the music history classes. Thank you, thank you...would love to know if there is any Sacred Harp singing in North Dakota.

Hi -I live in Louisiana, which is a loooong way from North Dakota, but here are some websites where info on shape note singing is available, including a listing of singings. The third website has some info on shape note singing in South Dakota - I thought they may have some further info which may be of help to you. Additionally, if you search for "shape note singing" www.youtube.com, you will find a lot of interesting clips. Both the documentary & the DVD of "Awake My Soul" (which is likely what you saw on PBS)are available on www.awakemysoul.com I am an Anthropology / Southern Folklife student - I've included my e-mail address, should you need any other info that I have at my disposal, feel free to contact me. Best of luck to you! Deb, Natchitoches, Louisianawww.fasola.orgwww.mcsr.olemiss.edu/~mudws/harp.htmlwww.kawshapenote.org/SDSing.pdf
