L.A. Buckets Defense Comes Up Big, Holds Off Late Rally by Pike Place for the Win
LOS ANGELES, CA - In a showdown of Northwest born-and-raised coaches, the L.A. Buckets held off a 4th quarter rally by the Pike Place Fish Flingers to win 27-16.
Pike Place had to play catch-up from the very beginning. On their opening drive, Pike Place had 3rd and 4 at their own 12 yard line. Captain Whidbey dropped back to pass and threw to The Glove. However, the Glove, known for his stealing abilities in basketball during his days with the Seattle Supersonics, would have the ball stolen from him. LA's corner read the short out route perfectly, and intercepted the pass, returning it to the end zone for LA's first TD.
Things would not get better for Pike Place. On their next drive, with almost 8 minutes to go in the 1st, it was 2nd and 14 at Pke Place's 16 yard line. Captain Whidbey dropped back to throw, and cocked his arm back. LA's linebacker Will Willer, coming on a delayed blitz, grabbed Captain Whidbey's arm, causing a fumble. Willer picked it up and ran into the end zone. Just like that, Pike Place was down 14-0.
"I was furious," said Coach Lambo. "I was considering putting Captain Whidbey at the backup quarterback position after that. I don't care if you have the largest island in Washington named after you. If you give the ball to the other team, you'll find yourself sitting at the bench rather than standing at the helm of your ship, Captain!" Then Coach Krieger calmed down. "Capn' Whidbey showed that he had heart. He almost led us to a comeback."
Later, a field goal by Big Foot would make it 14-3. However, LA would then drive 76 yards for another TD, making it 21-3. Suddenly, Pike Place found themselves in a deep hole.
"That was not a fun place to be in," said Pike Place offensive guard Hava Hewjass.
However, Pike Place would start to mount a comeback. On their last drive of the half, the Fish Flingers would drive 52 yards and get another field goal, making it 21-6. In the second half, Whidbey would throw another interception, setting up an easy field goal for LA, making it 24-6. Pike Place would not quit. They would later drive 54 yards and get another field goal from Big Foot, making it 24-9 in the 4th quarter. Later, Pike Place would put together their best drive of the game, driving 57 yards in 9 plays, capping it off with a 13 yard TD reception by Pearl Jam lead vocalist Eddie Vedder.
"Jeremy might have spoke in class today, but I spoke in the end zone today!" said Vedder.
The score was now 24-16. However, that would be it for the Pike Place rally. On LA's next drive, Pike Place's defense, having shut down LA for most of the second half, would suddenly become soft. LA, with their normally powerful running attack taken out by Pike Place's 8-man front, would take to the air. QB Derrick Nay would complete 12 straight passes, as LA would eventually kick a field goal and seal the win.
"We had some new pass plays in our offensive scheme," said Coach Tando. "We unveiled them that last drive and they worked well."
"They really surprised us with some new plays that we didn't see in any film," said Lambo. "They picked apart our man coverage. I was calling different types of blitzes but it seemed like nothing could get pressure on Nay. We were expecting them to run in that situation and they surprised us with the pass."
Despite the loss, Coach Lambo came away with some positives.
"With the exception of the two interceptions, our short passing game worked fairly well. Our run defense was solid. They have one of the best rushing offenses in the WFFL and we held them to only 51 yards rushing and 2 yards a carry."
Pike Place's defense is designed after the 1991 national championship University of Washington Husky defense, which led the nation in run defense that year (hence, the nickname "Lambo" for Coach Krieger, after Husky defensive coordinator Jim Lambright). It is also based off of Buddy Ryan's infamous "Bear" defense. Pike Place will put 8 men in the box, forcing teams to take to the air.
"There will be no victory salmon for the team tonight," said Lambo. "I'll be studying the game film carefully and making some adjustments. A few offensive plays, particularly our no-back sets, may need some adjustments to avoid sacks in the future."
Coach Lambo and Coach Tando were both born and raised in the Northwest, watching UW Husky football along the way.
"Coach Tando coached a great game," said Lambo in the post-gam press conference. "He is a veteran, and I'm glad I was able to hold my own against him. I'm looking forward to our rematch in Seattle. Now, excuse me while I go grab a latte and watch game film."

Follow-up by Jay Tando:

Post Game Notes

Coach Tando on the rally by Pike Place: "Damn dude. That was something- they had us on our heels. That team [Pike Place] is going to win a lot f games this year. Without those huge early breaks that went our way it would have been a completely different ballgame for us, that's for sure! I know they'll be ready for us in the Kingdome in week 12. I'm getting goosebumps already at the thought of playing in that house- against that team- you know they want payback!"

Star RB Anthony Wolf, on his lack of production: "Well we really had to take what they gave us. They are coached very well and shut down our run game expertly. There were no holes- and if there was a crack it closed real quick and their guys made the sticks. I know that most teams we face won't key on the run like they do so it should open up more in the future. I still was able to contribute through the air- QB Nay got me some swing passes that went for some big gains. It's all good- we got the win!"

Star QB Derrick Nay, on his stellar drive to ice the game in the 4th quarter: "It's been a while since I had to win a game for this team. But the run game just wasn't there and Coach Tando decided it was time to dust off some long-overlooked dink and dunk pass plays to get the chains moving and eat some clock on that last drive. Before that I missed some wide open guys and it hurt us. But on that last drive it was like I was in a zone- all the throws were just right- nothing too crazy- and we got it down the field. Man I was sweating on that FG try cuz I knew if he missed it- Pike Place could come down and tie it with a minute left. Thanfully he split the uprights."

Star WR Michael Day, on the modest day for him: "Hey man I don't expect a lot of balls anyway. But of the three I got that TD more than made up for all the missed throws most definitely. Pike Place has a stellar D and every time we went deep they had us covered- and when we got open the throw was off. Oh, well- it came out okay for us though, right?"

DB Lon Thompson on his INT for a TD: "That was beautiful- just right on the timing and then to get to the house was sweet. Nothing like hearing that crowd roar after a big play like that!"

LB Will Willer on his fumble recovery for a TD: "The delayed blitz worked to perfection- sometime we get burned on that play. This time I was able to get my hand on the ball and then get the lucky bounce. Before I knew it I was dancing in the endzone and we were up 14-zip just like that. Thank gawd we held on!"

Coach Lambo on Anthony Wolf: "Damn, that guy is a stellar back. We shut him down on the run, but then he took those swing passes for big gains. On one play during their last drive, we had him DOUBLE COVERED, and he broke BOTH TACKLES. We had the play sniffed out but he still was able to get the first down."
