A funny story, I hope, although it doesn't have
anything to do with the marvelous Thelonious
Bernard. My dad appeared with Diane Lane in "The
Cherry Orchard" at Lincoln Center in New York in
1977, when she was 12 years old. When he saw "A
Little Romance" a couple of years later, he claimed
that Laurence Olivier, upon seeing his mug shot in
the Italian newspaper, mimiced the gestures and
sounds he had made decades earlier when he
played Oedipus tearing his eyes out! My father's
reaction, which no one else in the audience
understood, of course, was to guffaw and shout at
the screen, "You Son of a *****!" I've always had a
soft spot for Olivier's performance in this film; it's
over the top in spots, but his last few scenes are
played so softly and with such dignity. I didn't see
ALR with my dad, but it is probably my favorite all-
time romantic film. Unfortunately, the novel upon
which it is based - e=mc2 by Patrick Cauvin -
seems never to have been translated into English.
Check out this website though: www.livre-po-
cher.com. A copy is for sale for only 1.5 euros and
the cover art is a photo from the film of our two
young romantics kissing! By the way, can anyone
say if Lane discusses Bernard in her interview on
the DVD? I vaguely remember her saying that he
was still around a few years ago on Inside the
Actors Studio. I'd love to see a sequel with the two
of them, and I certainly wouldn't mind a remake as
long as they got a couple of really strong young
actors for the leads. Sorry for the ridiculously long
post, everyone.
