Author Topic:   TRIBUTE BANDS...love em or hate em and why?

Curious! Tribute bands are popping up all over the country and are just recenlty becoming VERY popular. Why is that? Why are the BIG concerts of today are from bands from the 80's? Is there something lacking from the consumer's standpoint with most music written today? Are songs being written overly complicated to the point where musician laymen are turned off? What happened to sold out shows at Vets or Hilton...what happened to the IOWA JAM 1986? Now a day's bands will be lucky enough to fill the Val Air! Wait a minute i got off the subject! Tribute Bands "LOVE EM...or HATE EM!"

I don't mind a well-put together tribute band. They are good openers and usually can get the crowd into the music for the whole evening.

I didn’t mind Night Train at Waterstock, I thought they did a decent job and from the reaction from the crowd I would say they were a hit. I can’t speak how they performed technically as I don’t know squat about what it takes to play a song, but they did put together a performance that got the crowd pumped for the rest of a very long hot day.

The Atomic Punks are probably my top reason if I make it out to SummerJam. I was too young to ever see Roth-era VH and supposedly Ralph does a dead on Roth.
That is the lone exception I can think of a tribute band I'd go out of my way to see. Even the national touring KISS triubte bands and Hairball who is slated to be at the fair again this year, I can live without.
There is certainly a sector of rock fans who are down with it as proven by the fans down front for NT at Waterstock and the crowd I saw gathered for Hairball at last year's ISF. If you can make money doing it and have some fun then more power to you.
Bottom line is, I can be entertained by it to a certain extent but would much rather hear some good original music. I don't mind a band covering the music but leave the wigs and generic costumes at home.
This post in no way reflects my opinion of the talent it takes to pull off a tribute. I think most everyone would agree musically NT does a great job of covering GNR.

Mark, I completely agree. I'm dying to see Ralph Saenz more than the idea of the Atomic Punks. Ralph sang for LA Guns and has a fun band called Metal Skool or Metal Shop as some may know them. The guitarist he used to have in Atomic Punks played for DLR for a while, too, but he isn't currently in the band. Ralph is said to put on a great show with a great DLR impersonation. If it wasn't for him, I'd wait to show up for Ratt.

I'm a Sludge lurker so I know all about Metal Skool. When Ralph was in LAG they were in studio with Mancow and he asked him to sing Ice Cream Man. No joke he sounded just like DLR!

Ralph's also been on TV in some commercials. I would love to hear some of the stuff he's written, but I'm sure he makes more money doing the cover and tribute band thing.
I'm all for original music, but I seem to be in the minority. I understand the need for bands to get gigs by doing covers, but I appreciate bands that throw original songs in the mix. The best local band I've heard originals and covers is Standing Hampton. Their originals blend right in to the rest which means they stand up to the classics. For Love And Money is another great local band, but they haven't done much gigging for a while. Their original stuff has the Sting/U2 type of sound and it's great.
