I think Space: 1999 has tons of kick-butt potential for alternate history. Consider this example: Let's say that the Alphans were able to avoid the collision with the giant space entity known as the Space Brain. As a consequence, the Moon's course through space would have changed enough so that it would miss the Psychon homeworld by light-years. Some years later, the Alphans encounter a mysterious alien probe which soon transforms into a warship of the now-dying Dorcon Imperial Federation. On board the ship are thousands of Dorcon refugees including councelor Varda, the highest-ranking surviving member of the Dorcon government. As the Alphans assist the Dorcons, a Psychon warship -- captained by Maya -- arrives. Alpha attempts to fend off the Psychons, but of course the Psychons nearly destroy them. Soon thereafter, the Dorcon refugees are captured (and possibly executed) and the Alphan Lunar Authority is taken over by the Psychon Sovereignty.
