The Hunt walked wearily from the town of Rigger's Den, both Jonas and Goldar covered in fresh wounds. Magnus walked in silence as ever, his pack heavy with supplies.
Goldar spoke, his eyes fixed on the mountains in the distance.
"Denelar sided with Rivermen against the city of sailor's sons. But it was an army of walking dead that were raised for them that led to his death.
"Yet he did not know of this army until it was too late. The Elders must know of this, Jonas. We must return home."
Jajuka of the Slopes Clan posted 4/11/06 8:43 PM
Far north, where the colds winds brushed the last of the winters snow across the crags of the Linovel mountain, the wails of mourning begin. Spread across a pristine plateau where their offerings to the Gods would be spirited away by the driving gales, Denelars wives and children throw charms of their lost love into the oblivion of a winters day.
The white eagles of the Linovel eyes and ears travel quickly, while the sages predictions are read in the livers of those precious goats sacrificed for fortune and certainty;
Denelar is dead.
As his descendants begin their sorrowful wake, Jajuka peers out, beyond them, to the vast valley of Sanctuary and begins to doubt the future. War looms and his duty is to sharpen his sword and summon his warriors. Linovel blood taken on the grounds of the Usurpers demands retribution.
But can it be believed? Denelar found dead in woodlands near a Citizen settlement? Since witnessing the bravery and honour of those who visited, Jajuka had found it difficult to envision their neighbours as being so bloodthirsty.
Yet the Elders would demand revenge and the peoples would be moved by the elegy for their beloved Denelar. There would have to be vengeance to appease the clans. It was said that raiding parties had already set out for the Colleges.
With a sigh, memories of his dead friend washed over him, filling him to the core with mixed feelings of sadness, shame and anger. If Denelar had fallen at the hands of those sent to find him they would pay with blood by the gallon. Yet, they seemed so set on bringing him home.
Tearing himself away from the tear-streaked faces of the mourners, Jajuka turned to his chieftans. "Find me the Son of Ursis and his get of ragtag warriors." Steeling himself, he set his heart straight, "Bring them to me alive as kin."
He left them then and headed for the War council. He could only buy so much time...

"I joined Denelars side for a few moments, not realising how he hoped to achieve regaining our lands by raising the dead. Denelar was doing what he thought was right, only his methods were twisted. He seemed to see sense at the end, but it was too late. I and the few remaining warriors killed all the fools with him, but he dissapeared soon after turning on them. I will mourn him greatly. He was a true warrior, i am proud to say that i knew and fought him but survived to tell the tale."
Jonas packs up his backpack with food and fur blanket, and begins the walk to the linovel homelands with his battle brother, Goldar, the Son of Ursis.

Magnus walks slightly ahead of Goldar and Jonas his eyes scanning the ground ahead ever vigilante for trouble. He lets his mind contemplate what has happened and what the future will bring. Will the death of Danalar bring the tribes of the Linovel and the towns people to war, he hopes not but if it does he knows where his duties lie, if war comes no longer will he hunt for healing herds and food for the pot but he will be hunting those that a only a short time before he considered as friends but that is a discussion that is not his to make, the Elders will decide and he will obey.
His spirits are lifted at the thought of returning to see the Elders there is much he would ask of them and he hopes the gifts he is bringing will let them look favourably on his requests. If war comes his gifts to the Elders should be of great use, the magic sword will burn our enemies in battle and the papers and scrolls he acquired, even though he can’t open their case, should provide some useful information when it is finally opened.
Every step he takes he feels the call of the mists of Linovel mountain growing ever stronger, he feels it as he walks and dreams of it as he sleeps so wishing to feel its warm embrace as quickly as possible he picks up the pace slightly.

Goldar turns his head to acknowledge Katsumoto, the warrior of sailor's retreat.

"Welcome, Katsumoto. Has the mountains call been heard by the people of Sailor's retreat too?

"You are welcome to join us in the march, and to the Mountain we will head, with the news that will avert war carried on our lips. May the Wolf and the Bear watch over us, and may we be in time.

"We must hurry."

Jonas, Goldar, Magnus and Katsumoto are tired from their day of walking and decide to make camp.
Jonas gathers firewood from around some nearby trees and starts to make a small cooking fire.
once the he gets the fire going, he looks at his companions and wonders what they are thinking. Goldar sat praying to the Great Bear, Ursis. Magnus checking out the surrounding area. Katsumoto staring into the flames of the small fire.
Off in the distance Jonas hears the howls of a pack of wolves, closes his eyes and thinks of the first time he realised he was a Child of the Wolf.
He was only thirteen years old and was wandering in a woodland near his small settlement. as he was walking, he heard a fierce howl that scared him, so he climbed a tree to hide. as he reached what he thought was a safe height, a deer jumped from a bush nearby with a wolf close behind. He watched in awe as the massive wolf lept onto the deers back, gripping its head between its powerful jaws it twisted sharply to one side, breaking the deers kneck with a loud snap.
Jonas, concentrating more on the wolf than on his grip to the tree, slipped and fell to the ground. dazed, he sat up, to see the wolf no more than 6 foot away from him staring straight into his eyes. Even though the wolf was massive, Jonas felt no fear.
The wolf howled, one of the loudest sounds Jonas had ever heard, then turned and walked away into the trees.
Bringing himself back to the present, Jonas took some of his food from his bag, blaced his fur blanket on the ground and ate in silence.
Once finished, he looked to Goldar, who had finished praying and was eating.
"How many days do you think it will take to get home, Battlebrother?"

Goldar looked up from his silent meal, turning his head towars Jonas. The light of the fire glowed in Goldar's eyes, but there was another glow there too, shining out from within, setting Jonas ever so slightly on edge.
"That I do not know, brother, the march north is far and hard, and there are many days ahead of us yet. We will not be late, for Ursis has said what must be done. They are coming for us."
He leans back to look at the sky, to stare at the Great Bear looking down upon the band. Goldar whispers a few words into the air, and the glow in his eyes begins to fade.
"We are safe, watched over by the bear, and the wolf follows us, and we hear him even now. Sleep, and rest, for night has fallen.
"We do not have long, but we will make it, my brothers, for this is the word of the Bear."

Jonas, slight unsure as to Goldars strange look, decides to lay down but not sleep.
Goldar, believing that Jonas is asleep, returns to his prayers.
Altho he tried to stay awake, Jonas drifts off into a fitful sleep, having nightmares bad enough to scare even him.
In one, he was running across a field at night being chased by a large black shape. as he ran, he stumbled and fell. Looking up he saw a huge bear with silver scales rearing up to strike at him. The bear had eyes of bright red fire. As the large scaled claw came towards his head, Jonas woke up. Sitting bolt upright and shouting at the top of his woice, Jonas grabbed his sword in a vice-like grip, spinning wildly looking for the dream creature, only to find nothing but his companions edging away from him warily.
"where is it? did you see it? COME OUT AND FACE ME YOU UNHOLY BEAST!"

katsumoto slowly sits up looking at jonas and laying his hand on his shoulder. something stirres in the night, i feel a presence deep inside my very self. katsumoto turns to goldar looking for an answer he nods to katsumoto and continues with his prayers. Katsumoto silently lays back down on the ruff leaves underneath him and shuts his eyes although his hand remains on the hilt of his sword. silently lying and waiting in the darkness

Goldar looks up from his place, knelt upon his fur, club by his side, towards the screaming, sleep ridden Jonas. He closes his eyes and mutters a prayer to Ursis, aand then opens them again to look at Katsumoto, nodding as he does.

"Jonas", he says quietly, "Jonas! Child of Machias, calm, for it is naught but a memory on the dream plains."

Goldar sniffs at the air and scowls slightly, but doesn't move.

As the four travelers wait by the fire, they hear quiet growls and snarling just outside the light of the fire.
Jonas, still standing with sword in hand screams "Come get me you bitchsons!"
At that moment a large black shape jumps through the air and a claw slashes wildly at his troat, just missing as Jonas moves but still catching his shoulder, leaving a shallow cut.
Jonas spins and sends his sword slashing in a arc across the beasts legs, knocking it to the ground. The creature rolls off into the dark as another leaps from the darkness towards Goldar and Katsumoto.

Katsumoto lying still listening for signs of danger hears the bears jumping towards him and with a speedy motion rolls back over his shoulders and flips to his feet just as the beast whistles past his left shoulder, with sudden speed and a sudden burst of focus, theres a slight chink and his sword leaves his sheath and the slight glimmer bouncing off the sword from the moonlight sky, in a swirling motion he managed to easily cut through the beast before collapsing beside jonas in a heap of exaustion...

Ther beast that Jonas cut ran towards him once again, slashing wildly. jonas jumps back as the beast leaps forward, thrusting its claws towards his chest, spearing him to the ground as Jonas lifts his blade up sending it lancing into the creatures stomach.
Jonas bleeding badly in a heap on the floor makes no sound other that shallow breathing.
as the beast lays dead on the floor, katsumoto runs to the side of jonas with bandages and water, in an attempt to stop the bleeding from the vicious slashes on jonas's body.

Goldar gets to his feet, and, club in hand, stalks over silently to check the tracks that the beasts left. Two sets of tracks leasd off, into the distance. With a brief look back, he disappears into the night, following them back as far as he can.

"Are there any more, Katsumoto?"
"No Jonas, i think that is all for now"
Jonas lets go of his sword, stumbles two steps then falls to the ground unconscious. Katsumoto picks up his blanket and places it across Jonas.

Goldar rummages around, down on one knee, looking at the path that ran off to his left. He had been correct, a third track had split off here. But underneath it was another track. The hunt was on!

Goldar ran up the track, praying he was not too late, for the tracks were ones he recognised, the youngest member of the Hunt, Dragoon's. Suddenly the tracks veared left, and Goldar stopped, moving silently towards the thicket of trees before him. Movement!

With a muttered prayer, Goldar moved forwards towards the trees. He knelt down to the black puddle at his feet, and dipping a finger into it held it to the light.

"By the claws of Ursis, blood."

Goldar stood and stalked on towards the clearing, following the blood and battle trail. Hearing a cry, he charged forwards towards the beleagured Dragoon, and with an almight cry, swung his club across the skull of the fearsome beast, snapping its neck cleanly in 2.

Panting slightly, he pulled Dragoon to his feet, the warriors armour having saved his life, and began to walk with him back towards camp.

“In the name of Hakajou take your time, I thought I was soon to see him for my self”
“Where are the others in need to return to the hunt I need to seek out my prey”
Dragoon lets go of Goldars shoulder and attempts to walk on his own, he manages a few steps until his leg gives way blood pouring from a wound from the beast his ankle sprained from the swipe from the beast
“ARGH”
Dragoon Gasps trying to fill his lungs with air but not succeeding to clear his head or regain control of his limbs
“Goldar I …. I am too slow there may be more of those things coming leave me to see my God may we meet again on the Eternal hunt”

As Dragoon fell to the floor, Goldar knelt in silence, feeling Dragoon's ankle. Unable to do anything, Goldar left his side, and breathing calmly, wiped the blood from the wood of his club and arms with grass from the floor of the clearing, and returned to Dragoon once more.

"It is not time to meet your Kami, there were but three, and all now lay dead. Out your arm about my shoulder, my brother, and together we will return to the Hunters on the hill. There is much I must tell you, much that has befallen our people since you began your journey north once more. But for now, we must walk. Put your weight upon my shoulder, Dragoon."

******************************

Dawn broke over the camp of the Hunt, and the sleep filled eyes of Magnus, guarding the camp, watched the 2 figures in white fur walk ever closer. He stood and shielded his eyes from the piercing rays of the rising sun and beheld Goldar and Dragoon slowly walking towards the camp. The mountain was still so far away, and, with the Linovel surely calling for blood, and the Mists still calling him, the Hunt could not arrive there soon enough

It shifted, bringing its thoughts back to itself, remembering his own skin, flesh and bone; his self, his name.
SO they had killed the Darklings. As such, they must be strong warriors. Yet they had far to go and he had time to play. He could sense their power and their destinies, each entwined and seperating like branches in an almighty tree. The Warrior Goldar with the awesome strength of the bear within him, Jonus and his raging inner demons, Magnus with his cloud-thoughts, drifting on the breeze. The two others; Dragoon with his young impetuous nature and the Citizen. He was strangest of all; within his heart was a call for home.
But still, they would all bleed the same blood and feel the same keen fear.
For deeper in the pass there was a true monster...

The day drew on, midday rapidly approaching. Midday came and went, the afternoon dragged on, minutes lasting hours, expressions of grim determination set on the faces of the hunters, as the woods they walked grew thicker beyond the path. The leaves began to rustle around them, as heavy rain drops began to pound the lands. Within seconds the air had become a wall of water, drowning out all sounds, drenching the hunters to the skin, their furs offering little protection against the torrent that had erupted over the pass.

Ahead, the rain poured down the slopes of the foothills of the great mountain range, pouring in thin rivulets down the hard rock and already sodden earth, joining to form streams, pouring down into the mouth of the path, joining with yet more streams, gaining speed and momentum, pouring down into the small river below.

As the river flowed down towards the Sticklebrook below, the river flowed slower and slower, its banks higher and higher. Year upon year it built its bed ever higher, resting above the floodplain it once carved out of the valley it ran through.

The flood poured down into the river, faster and faster, the water level rising faster than it could flow away. And yet it still flowed into it, the storm water breaking the banks sending a deluge down the pass towards the Hunters below...

Jonas, still suffering badly from his wounds, is taken off of his feet by the moving floor of slippery, muddy water. Falling he draws his sword and plunges it into the ground and holds on for dear life.
"Goldar! I am not going to die like this! I feel weak as a day old cub!"
Goldar who was trying to stand against the wall of rushing water loses his footing and slides along the floor as Jonas grabs his arm and holds as tight as he can.
"If im not going to die, neither are you!"

Goldar struggled to his feet, holding Jonas tight, fighting his way through the flood water to grip the sword, hoping that its magical blade would hold.
He shouted to be heard above the raging torrent, "The trees are not 10 yards from here, we shall have to make it to their protection!"
With that he turned and put his arm about Jonas, and with a mighty effort, slipping and sliding, struggling to stay on his feet, the pair slowly fought their way through to the trees. The weight of the water pushed them against the trees, all but crushed. But somehow, Goldar lifted Jonas to the lower branches of the tree. Looking around him he saw the injured Dragoon and Magnus clinging onto a solitary tree for dear life.
Taking Jonas sword with him, he set off out into the flood, the first step into the unsheltered flood knocked him off his feet, and he stabbed the sword into the ground in desparation. But soon he was back on his feet.
Again and again he lost his footing, and again and again he stabbed the sword into the ground. But eventualy he reached the tree. Sheathing the sword, he linked arms with Magnus and Dragoon, the three struggled back towards the safety of the trees.
But once more they struggled, the flood pounding against them, taking their feet from under him. Goldar grit his teeth and, throwing Dragoon upstream, he unsheathed the sword and slammed it into the ground, pulling Magnus to it, catching Dragoon as he rushed past, pulling him to the anchor.
But too late he reached for it himself, and the flood lifted him off his feet, rushing him back down the pass, lost to the Hunt...

Slowly but surely the water level lowers and the rain begins to stop.
Climbing slowly down from the tree, Jonas spots his sword sticking from the ground where Goldar left it.
Picking it up, he sheaths it and starts to walk downhill to find out if Goldar and Katsumoto are lower down, or even alive still.

As he nears a small clearing, he notices a Mud covered mound of white fur. Rushing over, he pulls at the mud covering it, digging like a crazed animal only to find what remains of Goldars sheep fur top.
He begins to panic, thinking that if he were to find them, he may be to late. Pushing these weak thoughts to the back of his mind, Jonas carries on his search.

As the waters receded, the bruised, bedraggled body of Goldar was left wrapped around a tree, several days walk down the pass. As the sun rose on the nwew day, Goldar's eyes flicked open and gasped loudly, trying painfully to draw a breath, his crushed ribs threatening to squeeze his lungs of all air.
Looking to the sky, he gritted his teeth and pushed himself to his feet, looking about him, eyes bleary with pain. His fur was gone, his club prseumably long gone too, but what of the Hunt? Had his actions saved them?
His eyes flicked wide as he saw Katsumoto across the valley, the armour now mud encrusted and covered in the first flecks of rust. Recovering his wits as bed he could, tenaciously, he staggered to his side, collapsing to his knees, trying to wake him, hoping against hope that somehow Katsumoto had survived.

So, gritting his teeth, blinking away the tears of pain, Goldar leapt skywards to the thick lower branches, and, with a mighty cry, at the very end of his endurance, he brought a thick branch crashing to the floor.
As Goldar landed he cried out and fell forward, supporting himself, coughing blood onto the earth below him. Knowing that his ribs had pierced his lung, he bit down hard and plunged the knife into his chest, screaming oaths into the sky. With tremendous speed, the creature hits the tree with the decoy, sending it high into the air and catching it in a maw the size of a full grown man. There is a sickening crunch as the monster bites down.
A sudden stillness fills the clearing, revealing the monster for what it truly is; A River Dragon. Huge and predatory, with limbs of corded muscle and scales, wet and glistening it's dark eyes scan the growth around it for movement. Fins stretched across its back and arms flex, dripping brown water to the ground at its feet, whilst sinewy claws open and close in thoughtful anticipation. It's head, long and filled with dagger-teeth like a crocodile but the size of a cart, swings ponderously as it searches for prey, the tattered remains of the now ruined chainmail hanging from it's vicious jaws. Stood on two long legs with it's forarms supporting it, a tail easily longer than a river barge swings across the clearing as it turns. It's flanks rise and fall with quick, enormous breaths while the ragged snorting fills the clearing like the steady tick of a clock counting down... (Think Trex meets crocodile meets King Kong)

As the River Dragon stands looking around, it fails to notice from each of its sides and one behind the warriors with blades at the ready.
Jonas silently asks his wolf god not for divine intervention but only strength to live the next few moments well.
With a mighty roar he swings his magical blade as harder than he ever has directly into the dragons left front leg.

WIth a mighty bearlike roar, GOldar thuds his makeshift club into the leg of the waterdragon, blinded by his fury, the spirit of the bear filling him and lifting him above all pain, swinging again and again, roaring and snarling with each massive blow.

Screeching as the sword bites deep past its scaled defence, the River Dragon swings it's clawed arm, batting Jonas into the tree-line as it rounds on Goldar. As the bear-like Linovels attacks land home, the creature becomes further enraged, drawing back its leg and opening its serrated maw to bellow its indignation at the furious warrior, before snapping at him with lightning speed!

Goldar reacts faster, smashing his club into its teeth as it snaps at him. As it recoils, its jaws open, and he dives into its maw, pulling his dagger from his side, crouching safe behind its teeth.
Throwing himself to the back of its throat, he screams, slashing again and again at the bare flesh; howling as its blood splatters his face; stabbing and ripping, tearing at its throat from the inside.
