I have started to strip the wallpaper in a room. I put the paper up 12 years ago and I was not very sophisticated then. Apparently ( I am not sure I remember) I primed over older paper and then papered. When I strip the wall, I get down to the primer and sometimes I get down past the primer to the original wall paper. Its quite a mess. What can do or am I stuck with a major project here? |

If the bottom layer of paper is tight You can stop at the primer. Pull off anything loose and spackle the edges. Make sure you re-prime before hanging new paper. I use Shieldz made by Zinnser. If that bootom paper is loose than it must come off. Use a paper tiger to puncture threw the primer or a steamer so the moisture can get threw. The underlying paper is very tight, boy is it tight. The problem is that things are not consistent. There are places where the primer stays and places where it comes off |

Dont worry about the existing primer coming off because you will be re-priming. Just spackle rough spots. Even after re-priming you can look it over and do some spackling. http://www.paperhangit.com The Art Of Wallpapering |

I'll do that. I have a further question. This house was built in the early 60s. It looks as though there is yet another layer of paper under the old wall paper and the actual plaster is under that. What is that? |

It may not be actual wallpaper you are looking at under there. It could be a liner paper or it may be the paper facing of the wall board it self. http://www.paperhangit.com The Art Of Wallpapering |

That the paper might be part of the wall board is what concerns me. That's why I mentioned when the house was built. I don't think they do that anymore but they might have done it then? |
