I am the new wife. There is an ex-wife who had to move away and leave her son with myself and my husband (his father) due to her not being able to handle money and having no family in town. She moved to her brothers across the country. I tried to be nice and email pictures, mail school pictures, even a b-day party invitation, she never says thank you unless she has to. She does not give us one red cent and can't even afford to come visit him. She takes every effort I make and turns it into me doing something out of spite, if I tell her about things we do, she thinks I am throwing it in her face that she can't do them instead of taking it as I want her to know what her son is doing and feel included or involved. Should I just stop my efforts and say whatever she's gone and not worry if she knows anything about her son's life? There is no-one else to tell her about anything...my husband doesn't think that way and she has no family that lives around here at all to fill her in. She resents me for taking care of her son instead of appreciating that I am caring for him so well. I didn't make her lose everything and go into debt or have to leave her son, I have just tried to pickup the pieces, raise him as my own and give him everything he deserves and can't get from her, and at the same time try to help make sure they keep a relationship going.

In my opinion, if she is ugly to you whenever you do write, I would say don't worry about it. How old is the son? If he is old enough he can write her if he wants. Or mom can write him or you when/if she wants to know something. I am sure it is hard for her and she does feel insecure and ashamed that she is not there to care for him. Unfortunately, it sounds like she is taking it out on you. If you don't e-mail her, see how long it takes her to check on him. ONce she is the one seeking the information, then maybe she will see things, and you, differently.
