I am a comparatively new quizzer and joined Triangle(3rd division)in October. After browsing the message board I was wondering purely out of interest if anyone could explain the new scoring system that Mark Kerr referred to in his posting of 9th May.Presumably,it has not been adopted but how would it differ from the current system?Incidentally,I was given a decent welcome by my team members and after having played in six league games so far I would like to say that the Liverpool League is well run and offers enjoyable evenings. |

The system referred to was to let the person the question is directed at to have a free shot at answering it. If they get it right then two points but if they get it wrong then a fellow team member can still try for one point. The idea is to make it less threatening to new players like yourself. we did try it out in a cup competion last year, some people loved it other threatened never to play again if it were adopted. http://www.liverpoolquiz.org.uk/index1.html Liverpool Quiz League |

Keith, forgive me if I have misunderstood your reply but isn't the points system you have described the one in operation now?;at least that is how matches are conducted in the third division.Incidentally,I am by no means threatened by any question addressed to me so perhaps you may have misjudged me on that point.I might be relatively new to the League but to intimate that I might be devoid of the necesary knowledge to answer the questions is a trifle presumptuous-no offence meant of course. |

Apologies Keith. After rereading your reply a few times I realise that the points system you referred to is indeed not the one operating in the third division. My mistake. |

I actually prefer the scoring system referred to by Keith which was used in last year's Reilly Cup. Unfortunately, I understand from my team-mates that it was outvoted for use this year at the recent A.G.M. What a pity!Generally, I am the Q.M. for my team, though I do occasionally play. I am not a particularly confident player. Often, when I am unsure about an answer, I pass it to my team rather than trying for two points. When I am playing by the alternative rules, I will have a try, because I do not feel that I am letting the team down if I make a mistake. They can still try for one point.I really cannot understand why some quiz players, perhaps those experienced players in the first division, object so strongly to this alternative rule. If you, as an experienced player, know the answer, you will still obtain your two points. You might not be able to pick up as many spares, but that will be equally true for both teams. I understand that there is considerable difficulty in recruiting and retaining quiz players and new teams to the league. It might be because new players find it just a little bit intimidating. A simple rule change like this could encourage less confident players to participate more fully, without fear of letting the team down with an incorrect response. My team plays in the third division, so we do occasionally see new teams join the league. Some do not return for a second season. Surely we need to be encouraging new players to join, and boosting their confidence rather than putting them off? |

I could not agree more. |
