Sally our much loved setter has developed sore feet. She is five + and until now we have had no problems. She has no other skin complaints. I took her to the vets after she had been biting her paws. He prescibed a course of prednicare that seems to have reduced the problem.Has anyone had experience of this problem - if so advice would be appreciated. Thanks Nel

Hi Shirley,I wish I was that good a housekeeper, but no I don't use anything on the carpets. The vet recommended shampooing her feet with Malaseb but apart from customer resistance I don't really was to dose her with chemicals. I run a fairly chemical free house so I don't think it's anything at home.

Hi - my friend had a setter that had the most dreadful skin. She used to feed her on James Welbeloved which helped her no end. Just a thought. Good luck - it is such a worry when they chew themselves.

mmm I'm not sure if the problem is due to the very wet weather we were having ......apart from iced up paws - she seems fine now. Tho she is a wimp and complains about everything!!

Shake and vac and road salt or de icer that has run off cars onto the road. They are all very problematic for feet. Once the problem starts it can esculate. Just wash with cool water and dry with a towel (no fabric conditioner).

We have had problems with 2 setters with ears and feet. Our 3rd dog we are feeding no beef e.g chicken and rice dried food which seems to be working as he is 2 years old and has not yet had problems (touch wood). Chews and treats are the most difficult to find without beef.

Warm clean water. Make sure they are dry, if any sores develop cut the hair away and let the dog clean, just enough to clean, but not become obsessive. It's like being told not to scratch!! it takes time for the skin to settle and it can look worse before it gets better...road salt and de icer are the worst offenders at this time of year or an infection from contaminated soil, either by dog mess or from cattle/sheep.

I use Malaseb shampoo but not on a regular basis, I tend to use Aloe Vera veterinary spray, which is natural and soothes sore paws. I alaso grow Aloe Vera plants and the gel direct from the leaves is second to none for a multitude of things.
