Please can anyone suggest anything to help with itchy skin. We malaceb our setter on a a regular basis we also try not to feed her any cereals. She has oil of evening primrose tablets and we cover her in aloe vera. everything seems to calm her for a while and then she starts the nibbling and scratching again.

Try sulphur tablets from the chemist. They are just tiny tablets which you can put in their food or sulphur block which you purchase from pet stores which you put in their water. It needs a few weeks to build up in their system, to help the skin before any noticeable effects. It's homeopathic medicine and can be used frequently. Good luck.

Food/treats, cleaning products such as carpet cleaner/deodoriser and fabric conditioner, flea and tic products and vaccinations. How bad, where on her body and how long does it last. it could even be from where she walks, pesticides, contaminated water (ditches, diesel, sewage) or it could be stress ( a change within the home?) They are sensitive souls......

Hi Mary, our dog started suffering from very itchy feet & face last spring. He chewed his feet raw & had a pink hairless region around his mouth. He would also scratch under his arm pits at the front. We started him on some herbal tablets called skin-ease from America. We also bathed him in a herbal skin ease shampoo. This seemed to work for him. It hasn`t been back since, but we are wondering if it`s a seasonal thing & may come back in the spring when the pollen starts.Hope this helps.

Sorry for late reply. I put one tablet in their food or if i am using the sulphur blocks i just put it in the water. It doesn't affect our other dog's skin, if anything prevents future skin problems. If that hasn't helped, it could be a certain type of flea, can't remember the name but can irritate the skin which causes excessive scratching then the skin becomes inflamed. A medicated shampoo that can be used on sensitive skin is best for that. We've had four ES and three have all had problems with their skin, excessively biting their paws. Our latest one has had the most problems thus why i have a lot of knowledge on the subject. Hope that helps.

I have a two year old setter and he is now on immunotherapy jabs because he has a severe housedust mite allergy. We have just started him on denes greenleaf tablets and dermacton skin cream and it seems to help a little. We also have used piriton and evening primrose oil tablets and also yumega oil, all have eased the problem though not irradicated it. I must say I was told not to keep using the malaseb shampoo as it is for anti fungal infections and we were advised to bathe in warm sea salted water...

Hi Linda, my boy is still undergoing his immunotherapy, but must have had a large dose as he is really itchy at the moment... I think my email details are on this response if you have any other ideas to help him...?

Claire you are right not to use maleseb. Virbac do a few special mild shampoos =Allermyl and Epi sooth. Both can be prescribed and claimed on insurance. Also the flea spray the vets sell ( also available in Boots) kills dust mite and lasts they say for ayear. I use it around the house every 6 months and I think it definately helped

Our ES, Jack, has had skin problems since we had him as a pup. We did a test through the vets to understand what he was allergic to. The results showed he is allergic to cereals, potato, rice, grass, etc etc. We now feed him Butchers Tripe Mix, which seems to agree with him. He is not allergic to oates so the vet suggested to give him porridge oats to ensure he gets balance to his diet. The list of allergies was huge. We did try the allerdine injections to try and raise his tolerance but this proved too uncomfortable for Jack as his allergies are so severe. Jack's condition is kept under control with preds (steroids) - not ideal but the only solution we have found. Interesting to read of other ES with similar problems. Despite all his allergies, Jack is simply the happiest dog I have ever known. His tail wags constantly!
