I posted this as a new thread in the American Farriers Journal forum. ************************************************************************************************ To all interested parties who haul a trailer for any reason, including horseshoeing. You may want to check with your state department of motor vehicle for exact weight restrictions. I found out that a farrier pulling a trailer for horseshoeing was sited with a $20,000 fine for not having a US DOT or United States Department of Transportation number on his truck. When I looked into it with NYS and the US DOT, I found out that anyone pulling a trailer in NYS with a combined weight of over 10,000 pounds (truck and trailer) must have a US DOT number and it must be posted on each side of the hauling vehicle. This includes horse trailers, box trailer, any trailer and truck that weigh over 10,000 pounds in NYS. I found out that most states are similar but some do have weight differences. I filed for the application on line at the FMCSA site (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) site. It is free and you get an immediate number. About a week later you will get a mailer with the official paper work. You need to file as a private hauler not for hire motor carrier. The Federal and State Governments want to track vehicles over 10,000 pounds and this is how they are going about doing it. The best thing about this whole thing is that it is FREE. FREE. FREE. Therefore, I would advice that everyone check with their state DMV, US DOT, and/or FMCSA and get a ruling in each individual case. Dr. Esco Buff, PhD, CF
