Can someone define and show the similarities and differences between Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese medicine? I would also like to know of the different forms of energy medicine, how they differ, and how you apply them (ie. Gi Gong, Homeopathy, hands-on-healing, Reiki, etc.). Should all of this really be in the metaphyscial/spiritual forum? Let's hear from practitioners. |

I think I can clarify some information for you. Traditional Chinese Medicine has been around thousands of years, starting in China, spreading through Asia, Europe and finally to the States. We say TCM for short. It encompasses the use of acupuncture, cupping (Gwyneth Paltrow brought recent attention to this technique), Gwa Sha (a cousin of cupping) and of course, the use of herbology. Ayurveda originates from India and is entirely herbal medicine. Depak Chopra has brought attention to Ayurvedic medicine. TCM and Ayurvedic medicines are similar in that we have templates for diagnosing people/conditions -- but our templates are different. TCM practitioners start with yin & yang and go from there. TCM uses the "eight principles" to diagnose. Other acupuncturists who do not practice TCM are likely to use "five elements" -- this is from the Worsley school of thought. Professor Worsley originates from England and this school of theory for acupunture is referred to as Classical Acupuncture (a more European version, if you will). Homeopathy orginates from Germany and is a 200+ year old treatment method that involves taking a remedy by mouth. It is considered an energy medicine because there are either minimal amounts of a remedy (from animal, mineral, herbal sources) or more likely, there are no detectable amounts of the original medicine. Chi Gong is from China and is a movement style of memorized movement to heal and circulate the body. Reiki originates from Japan and involves either gentle touch or the hands held at a distance from the body to heal and adjust the energy field. Laying on of hands has been around for ages and I don't know the origins. Some faith healers may apply laying on of hands along with prayer to attempt to heal someone. To answer your question, I myself would not consider Tradional Chinese Medicine to be in the metaphyical forum, although there are aspects of shamanism that can be found deep in the study of this medicine. TCM is very practical. I don't consider Ayurveda or Homeopathy to be "metaphysical" either. That said, my beliefs are that both health and illness occur from a place of overall balance on all levels or lack of it, including the spirit of a person. The energy medicines of Reiki, hands-on-healing, and prayer are more metaphysical. It is not necessary though, to split the healing of body/mind/spirit into separate catagories in the way that western medicine is inclined to do, because as whole people, we encompass body, mind and spirit simultaneously. The lack of health in any one area, will eventually effect the other parts of ourselves. Many people are drawn to methods of healing outside of western medicine because the spirit of a person is considered, acknowledged and factored into the care and treatment. I hope this has been helpful. Sondra Lynn, Acupuncturist |

I'd like to add to the previous post in regards to Ayurveda. Ayurveda is India's ancient science of life, health & longevity. It is a truly holistic system and an art of daily living that has evolved from practical, philosophical, and spiritual insight. As it was originally passed down from enlightened sages to their disciples, it is not only a complete system of medicine in itself, it also provides guidelines and routines for healthy and spiritual living, as well as therapies to counteract the disease process and rejuvenate all bodily tissues and systems at a cellular level. Ayurveda does not use only herbs and herbal preparations to promote health, it also uses mineral compounds, dietary guidelines (food combining according to constitution, imbalance, season, and food energetic qualities), daily routines and lifestyle guidelines (including yoga & meditation), as well as panchakarma, a week long program for deep cleansing and cellular rejuvenation, and other therapies done with medicated oils to restore balance. Ayurveda's aim is to promote health through self-knowledge and harmony with nature. In other words, when we understand our unique constitution and what trows it off balance, we can make changes to counteract those factors and eliminate the cause of imbalance. http://www.bluelotusayurveda.com Blue Lotus Ayurveda Center - Health & Rejuvenation |

smars - An excellent natural and drug-free way to deal with the HBP is through Emotional Freedom Techniques. EFT is an amazing modality in the field of "Energy Psychology" - using a method of lightly tapping with the fingertips on certain accupressure points, or "meridians." It can also be used to greatly reduce stress, a major contributor to the HBP. You can be taught to do this for yourself. Working with a qualified EFT practitioner can also help you to discover any possible underlying emotional causes for the HBP. Check with the official EFT website, www.emofree.com for more info. http://www.wolfstone.us Holistic Healing & Transpersonal Learning Center, Black Mountain, NC |

Be aware when it comes to the extensive hype that comes along with multi-level marketed products. I would like to hear more of the specific comparisons of ancient traditions. |

Here's a quick definition of Vibrational Healing, taken from my book, Vibrational Healing through the Chakras: "The human body is made up of frequencies that form a harmonic and balanced whole when a person is healthy. The vibrations of the body easily go out of tune when a person experiences physical or emotional stress. Vibrational Healing employs vibratory tools to help the body remember its own healthy harmonic resonance . . . . The vibratory energies emanating from color, crystals, aromatherapy, light, and sound can break up these blockages, releasing the energy and allowing it to flow freely." http://www.highvibrations.net Excerpts from my books and lots of information about Vibrational Healing. |
