Yes ... I urge everyone to look at the next to the last picture on the first site listed below ... that is the very famous living room staircase ... I have seen that photo before ... this is a fine example of what I have tried to express regarding the idea of "theme" in design ... here he very clearly took the stand of trees outside and abstracted it into the staircase ... really connecting the exterior surroundings with the interior of the home ... also note the treads themselves - the fine detail in the shape of them - almost like a set of lily pads rising up to the upper levels ... it is truly beautiful and yet so simplistic and abstract ... very typically Aalto in its simple sophistication and use of local materials - something that he and FLW shared - a love of native materials in design ... And I truly love the Taoist connection - this house clearly does not fight for supremecy - it lives as I love to say "lightly on the earth" ... I think the simplicity here is so beautifully contrasted by the elegance and grandeur of his Opera House ... where clearly the idea was to abstract the drama of the theatre and the waves created by sound ... Has anyone looked at that yet??? Another of his especially notable projects was the Church of Three Crosses... Here is the site from the exhibit at MOMA ... it truly was fantastic ... they took his stools and literally created a tower to the ceiling with them ... really showing how he related form and function and how he very carefully considered various aspects in the life of his little stool - from how it was used to how it was stored ... the sculptural look of the stacked stools ... well it just has to be seen ... Aalto Another of his projects that really is to be commended is Baker House - the Grad Student Dorm at MIT ... Can only come up with one or two pics there too ... Looking for one of that amazing exterior staircase ... Will post if I find one ... Aalto 2 By the way - do you take nominations for featured architects and buildings?? How about Mackintosh's Glasgow School of Art?? Especially the library ... one of my very favorites ... Edin mak 1 mak 2 Villa Aalto 3 Aalto 4 Aalto 5 |

The Creator's Words ------------------- "The artist may have a very rich psychic organization—an easy grasp and a clear eye for essentials - a great variety of aptitudes—but that which characterises him above all else—and determines his vocation—is the exceptional development of the imaginative faculties— especially the imagination that creates—not only the imagination that represents. The power which the artist possesses of representing objects to himself explains the hallucinating character of his work— the poetry which pervades them—and their tendency towards symbolism— but the creative imagination is far more important. The artist cannot attain to mastery in his art unless he is endowed in the highest degree with the faculty of invention." —Charles Rennie Mackintosh. drawn from Robert Macleod, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. p97. from: Glasgow School of art |

Four good links about the WTC and other things. Good for anyone not familiar with Manhattan. Especially our friends from across the pond. The last link is good for research into various building types and styles. Be careful about any truncated links. Larry Many details about the WTC.
