The Jin Bao Slokar alto trombone is an OK horn.I noticed that the Chinese have copied a Yamaha (YAH203) and Besson (950) design for their newer Eb tenor (alto) horns.Has anybody tried these out? |

Have you seen what is sweeping ebay instruments searches? People are selling altos for dirt cheap, claiming they are high quality. I think they are Chinese made, and I would hesitate to buy one, because of the bad things I have heard. Only one or two of these looks like a legit deal, but I would like to know from some Eb pros- how bad could a cheap horn be? If they are selling it for a hundred bucks, will it turn out as bad as it looks?http://instruments.shop.ebay.com/items/Musical-Instruments__W0QQ_nkwZaltoQ20hornQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZQQ_mdoZMusicalQ2dInstrumentsQQ_sacatZ619 |

The ugly aspect of the Chinese imports is the quality of the machining and moving surface alloys. As a repairman, I can tell you that some cheap imported instruments can play fairly well, but they will inevitably fall apart due to the shoddy tolerances. though I have no direct experience with tenor horn repairs, the other repairs I have done on woodwinds is very aggravating. You can spend $150 on a $100 flute very quickly, though the horn plays reasonably well for student standards. Sad, isn't it? |

I particularly like the way some of these instruments(?) are described. One was advertised as an alto, baritone horn, tuba. Come on guys...which is it? |

The Chinese horns are mostly stencils (haven't come across any that aren't), and they vary in quality. I got a Berkeley Eb trumpet for one of my students and despite the bad rap Berkeley horns have often received, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this particular horn. Time will tell, though. The brass and valves look very good so far, but I've seen some imports that deteriorate drastically. Jupiter were very bad in the beginning, but then so was Yamaha back in the early 70's, and in the 70's Vincent Bach was making horns that were absolute unplayable garbage. Same goes for the attitude towards brass from India. Raison Brass horns are student-quality horns that from what I've seen are well-enough built to have earned my confidence. If you're in my situation, trying to build a community band in a remote rural area, and dealing with people who don't know instruments from farm-implements, you tend to look to the cheaper instruments to get people into it. My only advice is to not dismiss Chinese, Indian, etc., instruments as a body, but take them on a case-by-case basis. |

I bought one of the cheap altos on ebay anf it had a good sound but the top end was very sharp and the valves were very slow. It was not even good enough for our beginners because it was so out of tune from the low range to the high range. |

Well, I've had my Berkeley Eb trumpet for over a year now, it remains in perfect condition (which is a miracle, because it's student-used), and it performs just as well as the day it arrived. I've been hearing that guys are using both this horn and the Stomvi-copy piccolo trumpet professionally, which comes as little surprise. Berkeley is also selling an Eb tenor horn and Bb British-band-style baritone that both look to be knockoffs of good instruments. I can't vouch for these horns, as I haven't tried them, but a baritone went for $100 on eBay a few days ago, and at that price I think the worst you'd get would be a good student horn. http://gsmonks.webs.com/ |
