What advice do you have for those who have to grade papers while worrying about assignments they need to complete for the classes they're taking?

IF i have some assignment due and i have to also do grading, I tell my TA professor that i have one assignment to do myself, so i cant do grading for one or two days, but i will finish it after two days. This tactic gives me time and peace of mind while grading the papers so that i can be fair to everyone.

I communicate a timeline to my students about when they should expect me to return papers. On longer assignments, I usually give myself a week or so. By setting a deadline for myself and by letting my students hold me accountable, I usally manage to come through. After I set a deadline for myself, I budget the rest of my time for my own assignments.

I find that the classic sleep less do more tactic works. but it requires frequent trips to the coffee machine the following morning or two.

On behalf of the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence, we want to thank you for your comments. It sounds like you have learned the arts of communicating your needs to both your professors and to your students. Thanks for the advice. As for the coffee...Amen.
We have randomly drawn names out of those who have responded and we want to congratulate Satya Krosuri, Vaibhave and Joe Ulatowski. Each has won a free pizza from 'the Pie'. As for those of you who responded but did not win, we are sorry that we can't give a pizza to everyone.
We hope that you will all join us again next January when we discuss 'Classroom Management'.
