Micro Radio or correctly known as LPFM, Low Power Frequency Modulation, is in it's infancy. It is usually known a community radio because when you broadcast using an average of 10 to 100 watts the radio signal can only be heard in a 3 to 7 mile radius. There are a ton of rules, as usual, about it's operation. Happily there were stations popping up all over the U.S. until our friends at NPR, National Public Radio, protested and all new applications were denied. It isn't just large private corporations that want a monopoly on information distribution. Fortunately, as of now Sen. McCain and Leahy have introduced Senate Bill S.2505 that will enable over a thousand new LPFM stations to be licensed. Will they get this bill thru the Senate and House without being watered down with riders. Will the President even sign it? It will be interesting to watch.
