Shooting Event breaks record in the XV Pan American Games Rio 2007
RIO DE JANEIRO, July 16 – Shooting had other three finals this Monday, 16, at the Shooting Nacional Center, at Deodoro Sports Complex, breaking a Pan American record, at the trap. The new record athlete is the Argentinian Juan Carlos Dasque who hit 138 out of 150 plates thrown from the trap. Besides the record and the gold medal, the shooter qualified himself for the Olympic Games Beijing 2008.
Happy with his record, Dasques says he just wants to enjoy the moment. “I want to do one step at a time. For the moment, I do not think about the Olympic Games. For today, I’m quite happy with the gold medal I was awarded”, said the Argentinian, who earns his living as a dentist.
At the Podium, Dasque was followed by American Bret Erickson, silver medalist, hitting 137 plates, and Canadian Giuseppe di Salvatore, bronze medalist, who hit 134 plates. Having these results both athletes qualified their countries for Beijing 2008.
The discipline men’s pistol 50 meters was won by the American Jason Turner with 650,5 points, followed by another American, Daryl Szarenski, with 646,4 points, and bronze medalist was the Cuban Yulio Zorrilla, with 639,0 points.
At women’s air pistol, the gold medal winner was the canadian Avianna Chao, with 468,0 points, followed by Salvodoran Luisa Maida, with 467,9 and Cuban Kirenia Bello Trujillo, with 467,5 points.
After winning the event, Avianna said she started practicing the sport in 2001, due to her husband, who is also a shooter. “ That was the best decisión I’ve ever taken. Now we are always together”, said with fun the athlete during the Press Conference. Even after her victory Chao will still be nervous. “My heart was strongly beating, but I managed to control myself. I breathed deeply and got one more medal for my country” said the Canadian.

Silver medalist Luisa Maida overcame a serious health problem to take part at Rio 2007
Salvadoran Luisa Maida has a great life story to tell. The winner of the silver medal this Monday had three tumors taken out of her chest in the beginning of the year.
“I got out of the competitions for two months and no one would believe I could get a medal", said Maida really touched by the moment. "But thanks to God I overcame all of the difficulties and now I'm here. I dedicate this to God, all my family and to the people of El Salvador", added.
