We the Undersigned are deeply upset about the extremely insensitive and deeply offensive cartoon that was published in your universities newspaper, The Medium, during Holocaust Remembrance Week.

The student drawn cartoon, depicting a Jew atop an oven set up as a dunk tank, with the caption “Knock a Jew in the oven… Three throws for one dollar! … Really! No, REALLY!” beneath it, is completely without merit and cannot possibly be conceived of as satire or humor.

We are proud that Rutger’s administration has taken a stand against this terrible act.

As a university recently having dealt with divisive language in our own student newspaper, we understand how high tensions can run over such issues, and sympathize with your position.

The students of Brandeis University support your efforts to create dialogue and awareness about the Holocaust and anti-Semitism on your campus. In a time of tremendous pain, we stand together with those students on your campus who have spoken against the offensive cartoon, and are working actively to repair the wounds in your community.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned:
OVER 250 BRANDEIS STUDENTS SIGNED THIS PETITION IN A MATTER OF HOURS, BY HAND, IN PERSON.

Yay, jews for censorship. What a wonderful contribution!
Why can't you jews be more tolerant and open-minded?

tolerant? Towards people mocking the cruel matter of my own family members?
open-minded? About disrespect to the memory of innocents who died in shame, who died in fear, who died by the million from starvation, gas chambers and in mass graves?
No civil society can tolerate hatred and ignorance. No responsible person can read the despicable cartoon your newspaper printed and not be wounded by its thoughtlessness and hurtfulness.
Nowhere in the petition do we call for censorship. Nowhere does it say anything about shutting down anyone's freedom to speak.
What it does call for is support for those students who wish to see real dialogue and awareness of the Holocaust be brought to your campus-
so assholes like you don't continue to desecrate the sacred memory of those who died for merely being born Jews.

I also want to add that characterizing this petition as "jews who want censorship" is not only unfair, it is untrue. Black, Asians, Hispanics, non-Jewish whites, and others, as well as Jews, all signed this petition. In fact, of all the people I asked in one day to sign this petition, only two declined. This is not a Jew issue. This is a humanity issue. For those who find the cartoon amusing, I simply ask: where is yours?

Someone could easily distribute copies of The Medium to corporate America. I guarantee you that recruiting on campus for jobs would decrease significantly as a result. Rutgers students are not well trained in diversity, which is a principle of many companies. The Medium actually demonstrates a lack of diversity training among its students. Corporate America could easily suspend hiring Rutgers students due to lack of diveristy training and put an end to this newspaper.

Mind if I make a modest suggestion? Change the game to "Knock Down the World Trade Center". It would be a bowling/darts game of sorts -throw a model airplane at replicas of the Twin Towers and see if you can knock them down for a buck. Would that be any better than the oven cartoon?

Adam: You sing that well rehearsed humanity song very well. Why don't you sing it for the Palestinians? Brandeis was for the common man. But in his mind that meant that elites like him were to make their decisions for them, they being incapable of making them themselves. That's the sick heritage of your institution. That's why you put yourself above others.

Adam a group of us also believe that the Medium is out of line. The Medium empowers ignorance. This paper almost makes it okay to state racist and sexist comments. However, it is quite funny that the people who write these racist and sexist personals do not state these comments to the person themselves. A comment without a face makes the person stating them cowardly.

Vanessa, the Medium does not write the personals. From what I understand, its staff encourages people dissatisfied with its content to come to its staff meetings. Also, if you were to submit a personal that said "I love flowers, world peace, and holding hands and singing Kumbya to show my unity with and acceptance of different genders and cultures," I think the Medium would print that too.

It's easy for someone to cry wolf. It's hard for someone to actually do anything worthwhile about it.
The Medium itself isn't racist. It's an indicator of the racism on campus, and in general the world. That or it's a funny and extremely vulgar newspaper that you read with a grain of salt. You don't take it seriously. Period. That's the point. Even with the vulgarity, you either choose to read it or you don't.
The problem is when you have someone as ignorant as Adam expects things to be done after he's written a short post about how his people have suffered so much, blah blah blah. If Adam REALLY cared, he would go to Medium meetings, or heck he would have cared about the problem with the Medium was making fun of OTHER RACES.
Instead we have people like Adam and the NAACP just giving a crap whenever they're respective parties are involved. I don't remember the Jews being up in arms when the Asians were being made fun of. Or the NAACP getting involved when the Medium made fun of the Jews.
Put it this way, I pick up a Medium because sometimes it's funny. Most people understand that. It's when the idiots come out of their holes to make an argument so they can be noticed.

Vanessa: I suppose by your reasoning, the writers of The Federalist Papers were cowards.
