This is mostly for jake and emme as they will know what got me started on this, as it was the basis of our conversation at jake's. Emme stated that the rude boys wear nice suits to the shows because its "original rudie" or whatever, then i got to thinking..... THe original rude boys were from jamaica, where there isn't a whole lot of money for things such as three piece suits to wear to concerts. the jamaican rude boys did dress up, but not nearly to the extent that their british "second wave if you will" counterparts did. This is because the british rude boy evolved from a mix of the mod look, very dressy, snazzy perhaps, and the skinhead look, which also evolved from the mod look, by way of the "hard mod" or "working class mod(for those who don't know what mods are, stop reading... no, seriously)so in fact, a nice pair of shoes, dockers, and a button down overshirt would be roughly today's equivalent of the original rudeboy look, and the "rudie kids" you see at shows with the suits on are just ska mods( I made that term up) true british rudies would be closer to what i described to emme last night that she referred to as the "skinhead look"(no not all skinheads are racist, in fact the majority aren't, and if you didn't know this please reply with just your name and address so that i can come over and kick your ass) when in fact this is really more rudie than the suits. the only change that i would make to the look that i described would be sans braces(suspenders) and maybe a nice hat or something. thats all, sorry if i ranted it takes a while to get through thirty years of musical history and fashion. |

no, go for it emme, i waould really like to hear your take, and i'm not trying to be sarcastic, i really would. i think i'm right , but if i'm not, go for it. I can always be more informed than i already am(okay so that part was a little sarcastic but not totally because i do have vast musical knowledge) anyway, please respond. |
