I'm descended from Charles GADIE (also spelt GAUDY), the son of Walter and Betty StCLAIR, who was born in Kirkden, Angus. Charles settled in the upper Aire Valley in Yorkshire in the 1790s and had a large family- I'm descended from his eldest daughter MAry Ann. Other branches settles in Bradford, Hull, Barton on Humber and Everton. It seems that all or most of the Gadies in England are descended from Charles. My question is- is the GADIE surname a corruption of GEDDIE? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Daz, It seems to me it's absolutely possible that Geddie/Geddes/Gedy became Gadie/Gaudy. However, in Scotland we don't see this variant for known Geddie family members, and Angus does not seem to be a known Geddie stomping ground (as opposed to the Fife and Banffshire areas). We would certainly be interested in any further data you come upon showing a family connection here. Thank you for visiting, Lawrence
