Author Topic:   Baby Guinea Pig Troubles

My daughter's daycare just recently gave away baby guinea pigs because their female guinea pig had a bundle they were not prepared for... One of the issues I am having with the baby we took home is he acts as though he's very hyperactive (i.e. has bouts of hopping in circles, running into the sides of his cage and squeeking rapidly). It almost seems as though he is trying to play with an imaginary friend. I'm worried because I've never owned a guinea pig before and so I'm a little concerned about what he needs. He also made a noise like a pigeon the other day... a really deep throat noise that I have never heard him make before. Is this normal?? Does he need more activity?? Should we hold him more often?? Also, at night when I turn out the lights, for about 2-3 min straight he squeeks but then he stops and it sounds as though he feels more comfortable to roam his cage and "check things out". Do guinea pigs see better in the dark? Is he afraid of the dark? Sorry for all of the random questions. I just want to do what's best for him and provide accurate care. Thank you all so much for your time!

When guinea pigs make noise it's because they are happy. They jump around or bounce around because it's their form of exercise. A good rule of thumb is to make sure you get a cage that is some what long in length. We found ours at Petco. It'll run you between $60-$80, but it's well worth it. Another reason for all the running and noise is also because they're lonely and trying to get your attention. You may want to think about getting another to house with the one you already have, this way they have a play mate and it cuts down on their noise. They love ruffage. I normally go to Wal Mart and buy green & red leaf lettuce, kale, parsley, savoy cabbage, and baby carrots/matchstick carrots and mix that up and give it to ours. We have 8 guinea pigs total. We give them both the ruffage and their pellet mix. We normally feed them every 4 to 6 hours. If you have any more questions I've provided my email so you can write and ask. Good luck to you. Oh, another thing you can also do is take the guinea pig out of the cage at least 3 times a week and let him run around in a general specific area, you can let him do this in a specific room where he won't get stuck under any furniture and it won't be so hard to get him out, or you can purchase a pet playpen at Petco or Wal Mart, and interact with him on a daily basis. Just remember that guinea pigs can live up to 10 years.
