In what will probably be a vain attempt to stir up some life in this forum, i'd like to start a discussion on recording vocals.
I live in an apartment, anyone have any tips on recording vocals in a way that will not piss of my neighbours/roommate/cat?

Well, this totally gives away my secret, but I'll be nice and share. For my extreme screaming vocals I use my guitar. I turn on the bridge pickup only, max out the highs on the guitar, pedals, and amp, and scream/whisper. You know, like the kind of sound you'd make to describe a scream in your favourite black metal song while having a normal conversation. It's not loud or extreme, but the gain plays tricks with it. You can get some really high, piercing sounds just by being hoarse.
As for clean vocals, there really isn't any way to do them quietly. The louder and fuller you make them, the better they sound. I usually just find a time when the neighbours are being noisy anyway, or when they aren't home. When everyone would be gone from the apartment complex I would tell my girlfriend to go and run any errands that she had right then so that I could record vocals. I can't do my clean vocals in front of people because I am not very good at them and have to do them about 30 times to get an acceptable take.

hmm, i'll try playing around with that guitar technique, i'd previously just cupped my hands over my microphone, it gives an interesting effect and tends to muffle the noise to the outside. as for clean vocals, i have to practice much more, i can carry a note, but i hate the way my voice sounds.

I naturally either have a Moonspell-style bass voice or a high, nasal voice. Everything else is forced. I've always hated the nasal voice but since I'm stuck with it I've started to use it more and gotten more accustomed to it. I love my bass register but it never sounds right on my recordings. It loses its resonance somehow.
