I thought some of you might be interested in this. Of course, everybody's tolerance for performance will be different, but this is what I'm seeing.
Preliminary results are indicating that about 400 cabs per arcade will be acceptable. Things are a little slow in places now, but I still have lots of cabs to distribute. Once I have them in their rooms, it should improve a little. I might get up to 500 with a little luck before it gets too much for me to tolerate. If redistribution doesn't help, I'll probably have to back off some until it smooths out. I'm hoping for 400, because that means the only category I'd have to split would be the Shooters.
I'm running a P4 @ 2.4Ghz, 512MB of PC2600 RAM and a GEForce 4 MX420 with 64MB of video memory, using Windows 2000 Pro.

if you could you probably would have one arcade with all games ever made, don't you...lol! ;-)
How do you plan to find the game you want to play with hundreds off cabs?

If I had the machine for it, you bet. One giant arcade to wander around in, playing any machine I like. It's like I'm reverting to young adulthood :^)
I'll be keeping smaller gamelists available too, such as Favorites containing maybe 30-40 and the Top 10 list. That should give a nice balance between playing new games and my old favorites.
One of the things I most like about MAME is playing games I probably never would have tried in the arcade.
