Author Topic:   Shad Problem

Just read the KDFW fishing forcast for wilgreen and even though it said the fishing should be fair to good it also had a concern about gizzard shad. The report said the shad could have an impact on the fishing in 2008 and in the future. First of all thanks to the idiots that dumped them in the lake. There isn't any fish species large enough to take care of the shad problem in the lake and the lake is way to small to introduce any kind of fish to try to thin down the shad population. Wilgreen is slowly going to die if the state dosen't step in and do something.

I haven't seen the KDFW report, but if the shad are going to be a problem, is there anything that we can do about it? I wouldn't point fingers at the government, but I know if we want to solve a problem, we better take action ourselves. Can we put out some traps or something?

I agree that the state would have to step in and so something before any of us could do anything. I would like to see any estimates on the population of shad in the lake. Regardless of how many are there, they will reproduce at a large rate. The shad completely mess up and destroy the spawing beds of any fish. And since Wilgreen is way to small and to shallow to introduce any large predatory fish, this could be a huge problem in the near future. When someone intoduces a new species of fish in a lake that has never had them in there, well, it never turns out good. Just do the research. As if all the development around the lake and the sewage runoff from Decon Hills wasn't bad enough, now we have to deal with this.
