Many of you may be thinking, "This P4 computer is so slow. Can I build a WaveFrame computer using new, modern parts?" The answer is a resounding, "Yes!" We here at the WaveFrame Super Secret Research Lab have experimented with Dual-Core and Quad-Core Intel based machines with great success. One caveat, ON-BOARD SOUND CARDS DO NOT WORK. In each of my examples, we have had to utilize external USB audio devices. We use a TASCAM US-122 and an M-AUDIO Audiophile. Our Dual-Core system consists of an off the shelf Dell with a 2.8GHz Pentium Dual-Core with 1G RAM, a Matrox Parhelia APVe video card (see the next machine's description for my personal video card recommendation), a SCSI card and 10,000 RPM SCSI drive for sound, a SATA system drive, a drive for Quicktime video, and a Mykerinos card. This is the machine we use on a daily basis in Studio B. The machine we use in Studio A is what we have dubbed the WaveFrame5000. This machine consists of a re-purposed WF6 Chassis (it even has the WaveFrame logo!) containing an Intel DP35DP motherboard, an Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33GHz chip with 4G of Kingston KVR RAM, a 600W Cool Master power supply, a generic DVD burner, a SCSI card with a 10,000 RPM SCSI drive for sound, a 15,000 RPM SATA drive for Quicktime video, a 7200 RPM system drive, a Mykerinos card, 2 Vantec EZ Swap 2 hot swap boxes, and an ASUS GeForce 9800 GTX/9800 GTX+ video card. This is a video card originally made for gaming. It is liquid cooled (yes, it has a radiator surrounding the fan), is frame accurate, has dual output, and though we have not tested with WaveFrame, SLI is a feature of the card (4 monitors anyone?) Upping the cool factor is the use of one of the Vantec EZ Swap bays to house the system drive. Yes indeed. The reason? We have our Win2K WaveFrame system, and a WinXP Pyramix Masscore system. Two hugely powerful systems in one machine, utilizing the Mykerinos card to it's fullest extent. Remember, ON-BOARD SOUND CARDS DO NOT WORK. YOU MUST USE AN EXTERNAL AUDIO I/O DEVICE. Note: These machines are experimental, and while we have had tremendous success utilizing these components, we cannot guarantee specific results or compatibility. Use new components at your own risk.
