I have always considered my flytying my art form. What do you think? If this subject has been addressed before I would like to know how to find it in the appropriate archive. Mel |

Yes it's an art Form, not a craft. Having been a tyer for 62 years and a teacher of it for over 25 I feel it is paralle to painting. Anyone can wrap stuff on a hook yet it takes an artist to put together flies like those we use for Salmon. |

Well, I tend to look at it as a craft. Some of the fly styles go into the art relm and I guess all could be considered art. Generally though, when tying established patterns, I don't see it as art. Just one opinion for what it's worth. Now, if it's art you like to tie, you may be interested in an Atlantic Salmon & Steelhead tying contest that just started. If you're interested, email me and I will send a link. Happy Trails! Ronn |

It`s the way you approach your tying i think, tying "fishable flies" for me is a craft, making realistic flies is defenitely an art form. |

The kid has it right.....it's all in ones approach. First of all opinions are like you know what's.....eveyboidy has one. So, the simple FACT is, if you approcah it (fly tying) as a craft.....it's a craft. And there's absolutely nothin' wrong with a fine craftsman.....but with that, "that's" what you get, craftsmenship. If you approach it as an Art Form, THAT'S what you get. That is, IF your willing to do the hard work involved. An artist has to give of himself trmendously.....and be willing to suffer the consquences. it does NOT come easy.....trust me. But that's what makes it wourff it. All the hard work pays off if you hang in there long enough. Simple enough for Ronn to say it's a craft, (and i TOTALLY respect his "opinion"), when he is one the world's MASTER Artist at what he does on blind eye hooks. I've seen his fishing flies, and in my opinion, they are much more cratsman like than his artistic flies. His artistic flies.....let's just put it like this. IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER! They Stone Cold KILL! http://www.pureartflytying.ning.com http://www.pureartflytying.ning.com a site for PURELY Artistic flies. |
