Ok, I have been tying flies for about a year, and there's one thing i know. No matter where you shop, or where you get the supplies... it doesn't make you a better person. There are some tiers out there that just tick me off. They only shop at high priced stores because of the name of the store basically. Is there something wrong with BASS Pro Shops? Or is it that almost anyone can afford thier prices? Some of you tiers out there know who I'm talking about... all you want is to say that you got it from this store or that store, but really it doesn't matter. You think when you tie flies that the name of the store will be on the fly? I haven't seen one yet... and i don't think i will. So to those of you who do that, get a life and grow up. I have been tying for more than 30 years. I have found that, other than acquiring your own material through hunting, friends that hunt, etc., you get what you pay for. If BASS PRO has what you want, great. Just make sure you are getting the quality you want and not second rate stuff. |

While quality materials can make for a better looking fly, it is the experience of the tyer that makes a fly good or bad. When I was a child many years ago, my grandfather in a pinch could make a fly from materials around the house. He used sewing thread, old coats and/or sweaters, feathers from his parakeet and phone wire. Just remember it is the tyer that can make the difference. Practice is the key to making good looking flies. |

Jeff, Don't let it tick you off. It happens in all walks of life, not just fly tying. Get your materials where you want. Most tiers are buying the bulk of their materials at craft stores now. I don't understand why you would be mad at those who don't. Don't let them get to you like that. I refuse to tie hackled flies because of the prices of the rooster feathers. I just tie comparaduns with deer hair and catch just as many fish as the guy with the fancy hackled fly. |

Jeff, I just started tying a year ago myself and the fellow who showed me gave me some great advice, you can use what ever you want, it doesnt have to cost you a arm and a leg,experment and have fun . keep on tying''' |

I do get some stuff from shops but most of the time I save the hides off deer and tan the hides and dye it myself. I get alot of hair that way and save a bundle. If you know someone who raised rosters you can do the same with them and you get better quality saddles and hackles that way. Have fun |

I like to support my local independent supply place even though they cost a little more. Every time I walk in I'm gonna see one of two guys who work there, fish locally and have a wealth of knowledge about tying and local hot spots. When I go to the big chains I find a 15 year old kid making minimum wage who really doesn't care about fishing or have an interest in my fishing stories (maybe thats it, maybe I just like to gab)I don't know where you live, but I like Thruway in Walden ny the best. They have even given me videos and stuff on loan. |

True,Bass Pro does offer a very respectible fly tying dept. What I have learned is that a big part of fly fishing is the relationships you can build with others who truely love the sport. This can include those at the 'expensive' shops you mentioned. I too had your same feelings about them when I got started. I have now began to build their appreciation as a customer and rarely do they charge me the 'full' price for anything due to my continued patronage. They get to know you and are more eager to give very helpful information. You might save a buck or two here and there, but what have you really saved. |

My experience as a novice tier for 4 or 5 years is that the "name" stores tend to carry better quality materials. I agree that the tier most directly impacts the quality of the fly, but the materials are important too. Higher quality usually means you can use more of the material, so it may actually be cheaper in the long run. Finally, I can buy cheap materials at Walmart, but the clerk doesn't know a thing about fly tying. I shop at an "name" store, the most expensive in the region, because they tie with the same materials they sell me and they can always answer my questions. As one respondant says "You get what you pay for" so for these reasons, I go to the name stores. |
