I am moving up and showing under the appropriate heading my response + corrections and additions - to textile museums in Vietnam: Costume/textile museums in Vietnam. Since I visited I have heard that a new Ehtnology Museum in Hanoi has opened with a good exhibit. http://www.kit.nl/objectid/html/ethnology_museum.asp Address: Vietnam Museum of Ethnology Nguyen v.Huyen Road 191/20/10 Nghia Do, Can Ciay Hanoi, Vietnam Tel. 84 48 360 350 Fax.84 48 360 351 20 minutes northwest from centre of Hanoi city by taxi or #14 minibus runs from Dinh Tien Hoang St, north of Hoan Kiem Lake, to the Nghia Tan stop, a few blocks from the museum. Open daily 8-12noon, 1.30-4.30 except closed Mondays and Tet holiday, tours daily except Sunday. In 1995 I visited the Son La museum which includes a display of minority costume which was reasonably well displayed in glass cases. (Son La, Son La Province - en-route from Hanoi to Dien Bien Phu.) Thai Nguyen (North, north west of Hanoi) reputedly has (or had in 1995) a museum there with a good collection of minority costume – I met an American woman who had visited it and was very positive about it. Unfortunately I was scheduled to go there but was unable to do so. The Guide to Asian Textile Collections (prepared by the Textile Society of Hong Kong) says of this museum: "Cultural Museum of Nationalities, Thai Nguyen, Bac Thai Province, Vietnam, 70 KM from Hanoi, Beautiful display of the many ethnic groups found in Vietnam. Worth the drive but make sure it is open before you go." and it lists others: "Viet Nam Museum of Fine Arts 66, Nguyen Thai Hoc, Hanoi, Tel 52830, entrance 1 Dong, opening hrs daily except Mon 8-12noon Costumes, etc of over 50 ethnic groups" "Women Museum of Vietnam, 36 Ly Thuong Kiet Street, Hai Ba Trung, Hanoi, tel: 84 4 825 9935, 36, 37, fax 84 4 825 9129, opening times 8.00-4.30p.m., tours on weekends, Centre of Hanoi city, Exhibit of Vietnamese ethnic textile production." Under Shops the guide mentions: "East meets West" 24 Le Loi St, Dist 1, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, tel 823 1553, and fax 848 872 8198 - offering a select range of high quality Vietnamese handicrafts and hand woven hill tribe fabrics." Please post any additional information or also comments on the above mentioned museums and shop. http://www.pacross.net mainly tribal textiles and techniques |
