Help. I have been diagnosed about 16 years ago with MVP. I really don't have it checked regulary, I probably should. Anyway, every so often I get this feeling (mostly lying down) when I feel like my heart has completely just stopped beating and boom a hard thump. It will do this for a few minutes at a time. Scares me to death. I can go weeks and I'm fine and then it will act up for a week. Is your heart really stopping? Anyone, please help me understand this and if it happens to you, what do you do to calm yourself down. thank you.

I have also felt this before. Is it almost like your heart skips a beat? It is scary, but I think it's harmless. I believe the sensation is called a PVC.

I get these too, although the sensation is more in the base of my throat than in my chest. From what I understand it's kind of an extra beat before your regular heartbeat. I too can go for weeks without one and then get several in one day. They seem to get worse if I am stressed or even excited about something or if I even have just one cup of coffee. I have also noticed that they sometimes get worse right before my period. I don't know if they are harmful. My cardiologist doesn't seem worried about them (I guess it depends on which chamber of your heart is doing it)so I try not to be worried about them. They are scary though. I hope this helps. Anne H.

I also get these, but in the base of my throat. ive had the cardiologist do an echo the same day and i was fine and also have captured them on a monitor and they were nothing, i dont mean it like that,, they are scary but they are not life threatening. It took me a long time to realize that. its very odd

I get that feeling too, mine happens in my chest. Sometimes I'll go months without it then out of nowhere it will happen. A couple of times I've actually put my hand on my chest and breathed deeply to make sure I was still alive! Just remember it's the prolapse, breathe deeply and the flips will subside :)

Another possible cause for the palpitations acting up is lack of sleep or dehydration. My palps are always worse i I'm fatigued or not drinking enough fluids-not just water but fluids w/ electrolytes like Gatorade might help.

I can't tell you how nice it is to know that I am not a freak and other people have experienced this. Between the crushing chest pain and feeling like my heart just stops beating, I thought I was crazy. My sister has this, too. It seems like most of these postings are women. Thanks for the message board so that we know we aren't alone.

Boy oh boy, do I wish we could all sit together and talk in person. I have been getting tons of PVC's (those crazy extra beats) and feel so low, scared and alone. I don't think those around me "get it"... it really is impacting me emotionally.... The feeling in my chest grabs my full attention, then the worry takes over and I start to feel like there is something more serious going on...??? Am I alone in these feelings?!

My message is not showing up, so I'll try again.Sienna, hang in there. I was diagnosed with MVPS 7 years ago, but did not have major symptoms until 4 years ago. Since then I have experienced, palps, cold hands and feet, shortness of breath, insomnia, anxiety, etc etc etc. My suggestion to you is to check out the books out there on MVPS and to learn as much as you can. Remember you are not alone! Best of luck on your journey...

I was diagnosed with MVP 9 years ago. My dad died 9 years ago and 30 days after he died while at my office I started feeling sick. Started sweating a flash of heat all over my body and a sensation of dying took over me. All I wanted was to walk all over the place. I was having a panic attack but didn't know about it. My wife took me to the hospital, my blood pressure was high and I was extremely anxious. After 2 days in the hospital and lots of Xanax the diagnostic was MVP. The doctor wanted me to take madication but I totally refused because I've been an athlete all my life and strict vegetarian. I went home thinking that something was wrong with my heart but I was wrong it was all emotional and related to my MVP. I got into yoga and nutritional supplements. I became my own self until a few weeks ago that out of the blew I had a full blown panic attack. Scary, scary it was with all the crazy symptoms, palpitations, irregular heart beat, sweating etc. I'm 54 years old now and it seems that emotions have to do a lot with it. The difference is that now I understand better my conditon and I can deal with it better. I inherited from my mom. She is 84 years old and going strong. She walks everyday for 45 minutes and take supplemnents that I suggest. Also she follows a good diet with and drinks lots of water daily. If my mom is 84 years old and still in good health even though she's had the MVP condition all her life all of us with MVP could do the same. Live a long and healthy life. In my personal opinion we have to mainly keep our worries and stress to a minimum because it seems we are more sensitive to emotional stress.

Thank you for the words about your mother. I will keep that thought the nest time I wake up out of a dead sleep with the racing heart from a sugar low. My mother lived with the symptoms all of her life and my 16 year old daughter also had the symptoms. It is scary for her but it has made her more aware of her white flour, sugar intake as well as caffeine. Thanks again for the words of encouragement.

I woke up this morning to a squeezing sensation. It scared the mess out of me. It only lasted for a few seconds, and I feel fine now. I was on a beta blocker, but I weened myself off of it. My palps used to scare me to death. I feel I have them under control now. I think most of my palps were do to indigestion. I stopped eating most of the food that I loved due to I would be afraid of having palpation's later. I tried ever vitamin in the book to stop my palps, and nothing seemed to work. So once I figured out the palpation's would occur more frequent when I was gassy. I began taking a pro biotic, and within a few days I felt like a new man. No gassy feeling, and NO PALPATION'S. I was feeling gassy all this morning, so I think that could be the cause of my sudden squeeze attack. I had milk last night, and I don't digest milk well. So all my fellow MVP people. Try an pro biotic it really helped me. Garlic and fish tablets are good also.

Palpitations are very normal and do not injure your heart. I get these when lying on my left side, when stressed, walking, you name it. Water helps believe it or not! Relaxing and knowing it will pass will help too. Do both- take a long bath.

Ok, this is new for me. Diagnosed with MVP last week. My cardiologist says that I have had it for a long time, but after having four children, I gained some weight and now I am symptomatic. The palpitations are every day. They are scaring me OUT OF MY MIND!!!!! I cannot concentrate, I am not able to care for my kids properly. I just started a betablocker and it's not helping, although it is making me feel like complete crap! My youngest children are a set of two year old twins, and I just don't have the energy to keep up anymore. My husband is a busy MD who relies on me for everything else. I'm so tired. I just need some advice.

This is great that I'm not alone. I have suffered from palps seems it started when I was 12yrs. I recall the first time it happened. I had gone to the ER with my brother something had happened to him when all of a sudden I felt my heart racing started feeling panicky I was like omg I'm going to have a heart attack. The palpitations went on for yrs but I did not tell my parents cause I was scared and I thought that was normal. I only would get them once in a great while. When I turned 28yrs old it started again. I was getting them more frequently I thought I was going to die. I ended up in the ER a few times they would tell me nothing is wrong with you you are not having a heart attack. So finally I went to see a cardiologist who diagnosed me with MVP. I actually saw 3 different cardiologist just to make sure. I'm 37yrs old I have 2 kids 6 and 7 and I do not take any meds. I have learned to deal with them but sometimes they scare me. I go to the gym and try to drink lots of water. I just recently saw my cardiologist and he told me I will not die of a heat attack. I have an echo scheduled for July 25th. So we will see how my heart is.

Why is it that we can go on days without feeling palps when all of a sudden we get them. I know I have to deal with it but it stills scares me. Anyone feels palps and then gets panicky. Stell have you talked to your husband since he is an Md?
