Author Topic:   An interesting force
Brad posted 3/20/03 4:57 PM
I know different ways of forcing a card, but their is one way that I can not figure out how to do. The way is by spreading the cars out (face down) and letting a spectator pick any card... but that card is forced. I have looked all over the ebook that is on thelearnedpig website, but I can't seem to find that force in that book (202 ways of forcing a card). Does anyone know the name of it so that I can look it up in that book, or give me an explanation of how it works. I am sure that it must be in that ebook, but I can't find it anywhere.
Thanks

If you are truly allowing a free choice from a face-down spread, you can use a (miracle?) deck with rough-smooth alternate cards with the forced card being 26 of the 52 cards with rough faces and 26 disimilar cards having roughed backs.

Otherwise you need to use a key card and return the chosen card to the deck or manipulate the returned card by sleight etc etc

The cards are just a real deck of cards. The Miricle deck that you are talking about is the Svengali deck (or I believe that is what you are talking about). The deck of cards can be handled by the spectator afterwards. It is a really cool force, but I don't know where to learn it.
Does anyone else have a suggestion?
Thanks

Svengali cards are short/long cards but I take your oint.

From what you say - the spectator is free to examine the cards - they are all different and presumably mixed (shuffled). The cards are spread and then the spectator has a free selection from any card in the spread without any further intervention by the performer.

The ONLY way I can see this being performed is by using a reader deck or by switching the deck to one with ALL the cards being the force card or perhaps the rough/smooth miracle deck as previously mentioned.

Perhaps we can open this as a challenge to all the LPP forum readers, but unless its a switch I don't see how you can force such an open selection method. All other 'pick-a-card-any-card' forces with a regular deck rely on the magician controlling the deck somehow.

I found a video clip that shows someone doing the move. I have seen this done in front of my face and we were able to inspect the card. I am thinking of buying the video for it, but I almost think that it is a waste of money, since I am familiar with many other forces (just none as slick as this one). The web page for the clip is at:
http://www.magicsmith.com/cgi-bin/webcart/webcart.cgi?CONFIG=mountain&CHANGE=YES&NEXTPAGE=/demopages/excessiveforcedemo.htm&CODE=145
You may be right, it may be a special deck, but it is hard to say. I really think that when someone did it for me that I was able to handle the cards... but this was a long time ago and was when I was not very good at magic.
Thanks

The title says it all, it's the classic force. If you want to learn it, try Roberto Giobbi's "Card College" books (Books are STILL the best way to learn!).The classic force can in fact be done by "throwing" the deck on the table. If you hold a break when you throw/drop the deck on the table, the card you held the break at will be a little more exposed than the rest, and spectators will tend to select it. The key here is YOUR attitude, it MUST seem that you couldn't care less what card is selected. It's not 100%, but if you do it right, it's pretty close! Finn Jon did it to me...

You can also look for hoffsinzer spread control. This move can be adapted and used as a force.
It takes quite a lot of time to acquire but it serves you well once mastered ! And it is 100% sure !
