Asalaamu Alaikum ITs about time someone said this! I was furious to find so many hindi movies and songs when I was over there. I know malays used to be hindus, but come on, that was hundreds of years ago, shed it man! Either malays are enamoured of what the west is doing or what the hindus are doing. Why can't malays be proud of themselves and be an example to the other 50% of the country. ITs a shame! I went to Malaysia for hijra and then got surrounded by this kafir lifestyle. It reminds me of converts here who still want to have a christmas tree, give it up people, submit to Allah, that's what muslims do, stop imitating the kafirs and al-ahl kitab. Just my 2 cen. Wa Salaamu Alaikum Aishah Back To News Headlines -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Malaysia May Ban Hindi Movies for Bad Influence on Muslims Friday, October 04, 2002 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- By Kazi Mahmood, IOL South East Asia Correspondent KUALA LUMPUR, October 3 (IslamOnline) - Malaysia may ban Hindi movies for their bad cultural influence on some sections of the Malay-Muslim population, a source from the local religious authorities said Thursday, October 3. The ban may be imposed on some Hindi movies too religious in nature and which portray aspects of Hinduism that have a certain influence on Malays, the source said. The local religious authorities or the JAIS (Malaysia Islamic Enforcement Agency) is said to have investigated reports that a section of the Muslim community were adopting Hindu wedding rites and rituals shown in movies. One such case was exposed a few months ago when local Malay newspapers reported that a Malay couple were married according to Hindu rituals, with the bride and groom tied to each other after which they encircle a fire place. This sparked criticism from various circles and the authorities were told to take actions to prevent such happenings. It is, however, unclear whether the Home Ministry will issue a ban on some movies or will simply censor scenes of bad influence to the public in general. The issue is, however, a thorny one in Malaysia – a multi-cultural nation that has recently declared itself an Islamic state due to its larger Muslim population. Malaysia has further implemented several laws and regulations in line with Islamic teachings. Hindi movies have become a hit in Malay-Muslim households with sale of original and pirated VCD's spiraling in the country. Hindi actors are extremely popular with locals, especially Shah Rukh Khan and Amir Khan. Their movies are instantly sold out in the entire country and a large section of buyers are Malays, sources told IslamOnline. "The theatrics of actor Shah Rukh Khan has captured the minds of the people to such an extent that they would follow everything he does...including getting married the way he would get married in those movies," claimed the source, who works in the enforcement division of the JAIS, which stands for Malaysian Islamic Department. The source told IslamOnline that it was the duty of the JAKIM (The Department of Islamic Advancement Malaysia and the Home Ministry) to decide on how to control any forms of diversions from Islam that may arise from the airing of Hindi movies in Malaysia. Hindi movies became popular in mid 1990's. Indonesia was the first country where Indian movies became hits and this spilled over to Malaysia where the popularity of its male actors is undeniable. Malay teenagers would rush to buy the latest posters of their favorite actors and scores of them would be at the airport to greet the arrival of the most popular actors. Last year there were debates in local Malay dailies on the influence of Hindi movies on the locals. One editorialist wrote that the influence of Hindi movies and the popularity of Hindi actors were beyond comprehension since the Malays in particular do not understand Hindi or Urdu. All the movies screened on TV, Cinemas or on VCD's bear Malay subtitles. Local TV stations too are scrambling to air the latest Hindi movies in a bid to beat VCD piracy on the market, the source told IslamOnline. On the other hand, there are indications that Indian movies might still be given a free viewing in Malaysia with the aim of allowing the production and filming of more movies on Malaysian soil. Bernama reported Thursday that the Perak state has developed a strategy to attract more tourists through foreign film making in Malaysia. The news agency said Perak's mission to attract tourists through foreign films is beginning to bear fruit as South Indian movie producers will shoot three films in the state next month and screen them back home to an audience of some 140 million. Two Tamil movies, "Kathal Kisu-Kisu" (Love Gossip) and Malaysian Marumagal (Malaysian Daughter-in-Law) will be shot by producers from Chennai, India while "Nenante Ishtamena" (Do You Like Me) is a Telegu movie by Andra Pradesh filmmakers. One of the movies was officially launched in India by Perak Chief Minister Tajol Rosli Ghazali before scores of Tamil movie stars, directors and producers, the agency said. Popular tourist places in Perak such as Gunung Lang, Bukit Merah, Taiping, Lenggong, Pangkor, Kuala Sepetang and Clear Water Sanctuary in Perak are to be featured in all the three films. Wa'alaikumusalam Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh. I totally agree with you. I find it strange that so many Malays buy up all of these hindi films and like them so much. Actually, a Hindi film is quite boring and it just a bunch of song and dance.... gosh, I just hate musicals and that is all Hindi films are! They are never serious in the movie...no serious plot can ever take hold because they will start to sing and dance just when you think the movie *might* be getting good. *laugh* Hindi films are just for brainless idiots who are ashamed to be Malay or who have identity crisis. Have you noticed that Malays have incorporated many Hindu ways into their weddings? This is even before the Hindi films came here. They do the "bersanding" and the woman paints her fingers with henna...and they think this is Islamic! Hello people! Wake up! This is HINDU practice and not Islamic at all. We should never copy the kuffar and definitely not in such a sacred thing like marriage. We should do it the way the Prophet (saw) and his companions and family did. Any other way is deviant. We don't want our way of life (which is Islam) polluted by these Hindu and other kaffir ways. |

Hmmm.... looks like you have a problem. Let's try to sort things out ok? 1. You hate this thing about Malay Muslims being influenced with all those "Kafirism" and Hindi medias. 2. You question about the roots of Malays Muslims themselves. Why not stick to their own culture instead. My say: -What is the Malay culture in the first place? -How much is it being practised? -Hari Raya, Islam, Puasa, Ali "bin" Baba, etc... Is this native Malay? If it's not then what's Malay native? -If not much of Malay culture is practised today, when will it soon be gone? -Will the Malay language be gone too someday? Perhaps replaced by Arabian? -Look at the architecture of mosques. By right they should be foreign too based on our local standards. |

I could care less if you reply, you are obviously not muslim so I don't really care about your opinion. Malays are muslim and they should act that way. Islam supercedes culture. Islam is a complete way of life. There is nothing wrong with knowing your own language and preserving it but learning Arabic is to learn the deep inner meaning of the Quran which muslims should do. Masjids don't have to be replicas of ones in arab lands but they do have to have certain features like a place to call the adhan etc.... PS Stop reading the arabian nights and start reading the Quran! Aishah |

Assalamualaikum, The main problem with Malays is we are still very much "ruled" by the British. The common word "nanti apa orang kata" had gone deep into us that we tend to follow traditions. In Kampong Baru for example one late Ustaz Ramli had from time to time discouraged the bersanding since it is a Hindu tradition but not many followed. He sometimes lamented during his kuliah subuh that we are not able to discard the practice. It is the "nanti apa kata orang" is the normal excuse. Muslims Malays are weak in principals that we tend to tollerate many unhealthy things but will go against those who pursue good as enjoined by Allah. Look what happened to one mufti who took action against a Malay Muslim girl taking part in a beauty peagant contest? Compare to the concert Sure Heboh where majority waited from daylight till 9:00 pm after isha. How many of us took care of the prayers of Maghrib & Isha? No one worried about these. Look at the Pasar Malam starting after Asr until late after Isha. Even my little daughter sometimes ask me, abah macam mana mereka solat? Malays by nature like singing, dancing etc. that is why hindi films are popular. Until such times when we start to worry about our solat as a start, Malays will continue to be from bad to worse. In those days when Al Arqam was still there the unhealthy things were quite contained. But maybe there are those who like karaoke, dangdut, etc and felt restricted somewhat had made Al Arqam banned just bacause of 1 suppossedly deviationist zikr whereas this can be rectified instead. May Allah give us the strength and the hidayat to be able to change to be better in the years to come. |

Asalaamu Alaikum Malaysians are praying but they still think that all that stuff is fine. They practice their religion but they are not knowlegeable. How many Malaysians even read the Quran and hadith in Malay? 1 in a 1000 or probably less! The masjids should become religious centres for teaching the entire family. I never saw women go to the masjid except old women....how can kids get influenced when their moms are ignorant? Aishah |

Islam is not a culture , it is a religion....a muslim can practice thier culture as long as it is in line with Islam (submission to God). Non-muslims can continue to do as they please. A muslim is someone who willingly submits to God not someone who has something shoved down their throat. The Quran says there is no compulsion in religion which means people are free to decide which religion to follow but once they have CHOSEN to SUBMIT to God then they are supposed to be following HIS rules not their own opinions etc... Islam is not arab culture, it is a religion brought to ALL MANKIND by the last prophet of God! |

Assalamualaikum, Maybe Ali & Heena are from the new generations or they had been exposed since childhood on Hindi movies that both could not see the "bad influences". Islam & muslims as the years goes by especially in the so-called "muslim countries" tend to open-up and welcome "a lot" which make the new generations to be "westernised". Ali and Heena are not to be blameed for not able to see. We sometimes are confused where activities such as new year celebrations runs through the night until dawn unknowingly misteaching our children the "correct ways" of spending the wee hours, where Nabi Muhammad peace be on him, had spent hours praying for the ummah at those sacred times. It is difficult to show people what is good and what is bad when he/she do not understand either. I myself find difficulties sometimes teaching my daughters about hijab when she sees our elderlies, leaders, teachers etc. not practicing it. Similarly when we had been exposed to Hindi movies since childhood we cannot differentiate what is good and bad. May Allah bless us with His guidance always. |

Salam....I think there is nothing wrong watching Hindi movies or other movies for that matter...(however, I am against watching XXX rated movies)...as long as it does not take us away from rememberance of Allah... when it is time to pray, we pray...nope...if we ban hindi movies, it has nothing to do with religion; more the influence that Hindi movies has over the Malays...but ban it? I dont think it is right... |

No one said Hollywood movies were ok either and Malaysia does censor and edit them. However, Bollywood films have much more Hindu religious content which is influencing many people into deviant practice. I don't see people flocking to churches or synagogues to get married as is seen in Hollywood films, but many are incorporating Hindu religious rites into their weddings because of the Bollywood films. Because Bollywood films seem to influence society in Malaysia and Indonesia MORE than Hollywood films, stern action must be taken against these Hindi films. |

Assalamualaikum to all Muslims reading this and May Peace and Iman come to the rest. Sister Aishah is saying it as it sadly is.The Muslims in Malaysia are a pampered lot compared to the rest of the suffering Islamic world where all kinds of atrocities, mayhem etcetera are happening almost daily. Malaysian Muslims are actually very exposed to a hedonistic lifestyle encouraged by a 'moderate' government that has declared itself 'Islamic'. The ruling Barisan National coalition government is led by UMNO, a Malay political party.UMNO can't risk alienating the common Malay by exercising the true teachings of Islam as doing so would lead to its expulsion from power at the next general elections. So, we are forced to live amongst the general Malay Muslim population today who love to waste away their lives at Concerts,Funfairs,Talentime Contests,Cinemas, etcetera in the name of Entertainment. With Astro Satellite TV, we see Malay Muslims transfixed before the TV everyday to see who will win the Akademi Fantasia reality talent show.It takes place every Saturday 8.00pm (Maghrib comes and goes,Isya disappears into the deep of the night) but no one moves away from the TV till about midnight.Do you think this Akademi Fantasia fans, parents and spectators care or give a hoot about those prayers? So the rot takes place deeper and deeper by the days.Concert 'SureHeboh' by TV3 takes place almost every fortnight throughout the major cities of Malaysia.Malays turn up in hundreds of thousands , in a sea of humanity, male and female close together and everyone just whiles away their time from morning till the wee midnight hours.Hundreds of thousands of Ringgits(Malaysian currency) are blown away in the name of Entertaining the Masses. Today , Arab tourists throng the major tourist spots of Kuala Lumpur and other major cities like Penang,Ipoh etcetera to shop, holiday and enjoy themselves.Arab women who came dressed in Hijab , change into jeans, hip exposing t-shirts and crowd themselves into discos and 'hotspots' in Jalan P.Ramlee and other 'happening' spots of KL. Who cares? Seems like no one does except people like Sister Aishah and a few likeminded fellow Muslims. Those who view these outpourings of grief to see our fellow Muslims, Malays,Tamils,Arabs or whatever waste away our lives just curse away as if they are perfect and that the lifestyle that sadly is corrupting almost every other person on Earth! These are the Last Days nearing Kiamat as Rasulullah SAW has spoken of. "In the Last Days, you will see, women dressed, yet they are naked. You will witness all kinds of maksiat happening right before your eyes.People will have Iman in the morning and lose it at the evening < meaning forgetting to pray, etc." We see these things happening today, before our very eyes as Rasulullah SAw has said. UMNO is not perfect, neither is the Opposition party, PAS. PAS comes across as a party of extreme individuals albeit there are amongst the younger echelons, a more moderate group of activists. I pray that Allah SWT gives a chance to these individuals to come stop the rot before Malaysia goes to waste socially and morally.Amin. In the meantime, stricter censorship of the Hindi or whatever other forms of time wasting entertainment media is monitored or even banned. But then again as long as there is nafs in the human heart, sin will always be part and parcel of our lives. http://zainolabideen.tripod/ Landbanking |
