My grandfather was Otto Jefferson Hileman (1/1/1879-6/18/1939). He was a barber in Millcreek, IL. Married to Alice Jane Knupp and had two sons and one daughter. I know nothing else about his man. Would love to know where he was from and his family background.

Hi Constance,
I spend quite a little time researching the HILEMAN surname and maybe I can be of some help. Your relative lived in Union County, IL. I therefore assume he was part of a rather large HILEMAN clan who all settled in Union County, IL. Many of them also lived in Anna.
Their are four distinct groups of Hileman's, that I can tell. They all appear to have come from a common family who migrated from Germany in the late 1600's or early 1700's to Pennsylvania. After some time one group went to the Carolina's, another to Blair/Huntingdon County PA around 1800, another settled in the Armstrong County area, and another went to the Union County, IL area. I am a descendant of the one of the two Michael Hileman's (not the one in the Good-Hileman book) that settled in the Huntingdon/Blair County, PA area and migrated to Jo Daviess County, IL around 1850.
Have you tried the Hileman Mailing List? How about the Hileman Board? I can give you direction to these things as well as search my own records for your ancestor if you wish.

Hi Constance,
Just a note to let you know that I have started a Hileman Surname Reconstruction Project. This is DNA testing project. I am especially interested in finding a male Hileman participant from the Good-Hileman lineage. I believe my lineage is connected to the Good-Hileman
lineage and this would prove or disprove my theory. If your are interested in learning more about what DNA testing can provide you go to: http://www.FamilyTreeDNA.com . To go to the Hileman page just type in "Hileman" in the "Search by surname" at the top-right of the page. If you have any questions, please contact me.
Hal
