John C. Sunderlin was sent to England by Russell to oversee the circulation of Food for Thinking Christians.A brief biography appears in Bascom's The Fort Edward Book (1903):"Sunderlin, John Corbin, born June 20, 1835, at Fort Ann, N.Y., son of Lewis B. Vorce, and Jane Ann Corbin, his wife. Mr. Sunderlin having received the name by which he is now known, by adoption, his mother having died when we was but three months old. Married August 19, 1855, at Pitsstown, N. Y., Harriet A. Penney, b. April 23, 1832, at Pittstown, N. Y., daughter of Edward Penney, and Amanda Townsend, his wife. Mrs. Sunderlin died June 14, 1899. Five children-Joseph L. B., b. November 15, 1857; Mary Jane, b. January 18, 1860; Harriet Amanda, b. January 28, 1862; Martha Ann, b. May 20, 1865, and Jouh Edward, b. June 6, 1873. Mr. Sunderlin received a common school education, and his early life was passed on the farm, and in mechanical pursuits. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and of the Grand Army of the Republic. In Politics he has acted with the Prohibition party, and for many years last past, has been engaged in the photograph business."

In the speech Russell addressed at a Masonic Temple in 1913 he stated he had some friends who were Francmasons. So it seems Sunderlin might be one of them.
