Welcome to my Discussion Board. This Board is operated by one of Jehovah's Witnesses, for other spiritually mature Jehovah's Witnesses, who desire to study the "deeper things" regarding 19th century history of the organization.

This Topic Thread will serve as the location for ALL NEW POSTS relating to existing topics. After a post has been in this NEW POST thread for a few weeks, I will then move it to the appropriate "existing" thread. Please note at the beginning of your post, to which "existing topic" you are responding.

If a Visitor wishes to introduce a "new topic", please email your intended post to:

JWs1800s@yahoo.com

for prior approval. Topics must relate to the 19th century "history" theme of this site, and must NOT speak negatively of Jehovah's Witnesses, the Society, or the "Pioneers".

Thanks, and enjoy.
Agape!!!

I love this site. My greatgrandfather was baptised in 1876 in Penn. USA
His funeral talk was given my Bro. Van Amberg. I'm proud to say we have 6th generation servers of Jehovah in both my family and my wifes.

Hi,
Interesting site. Can I ask, is it true that Russell's great grandparents came from Scotland?

ADM: Russell was Scotch-Irish, which means his ancestors emigrated from Scotland to Ireland before coming to America.

"Bruce":
Thank you for your recent contributions. Evidently, you are one of the most informed persons out there re CTR's history.
Can you document everything that you have posted?
Should not your knowledge be shared broadly lest something happen to you?
The sharing of documented historical facts should transcend any doctrinal differences held 'mongst those who share such a limited common interest.
You don't have to publish such here.
Please just publish ANYWHERE!
Thanks.

Hi all!
I hope you find this interesting.
GEORGE STORRS
Dense hair and beard, dark and grey. He shaved his moustache when older, like Russell would do, but with a shorter beard. Serious and elegant expression.
ARTHUR P. ADAMS
Nearly bald, long dark moustache, broad face, slightly fat jowls, broad back and expression of determination.
JOHN H. PATON
He was slim, with thin face. Dense and short hair, combed backwards (it looks like red, and later grey), big moustache and long goatee, which along with the rings under his eyes gave him a stern expression. Dressed in black.
MENTA STURGEON
I once saw a picture of him and he was slim, with blond or grey hair and a big moustache.
PAUL SAMUEL LEVI JOHNSON
"He was very tall and a big muscular man... and touted a goatee most of his life." (Thanks, Jonalfred.)
A receding hairline and dark hair in his youth, and bald and grey hair (and goatee) when older. He seems to be good-looking in his youth, and his face, specially as an old man, seems broad.
ALFRED I. RITCHIE
Round face, little hair (just temples, back and top of the head), dark hair and goatee, not very tall.
JAMES DENNIS WRIGHT
I have only a very small picture of him, not very clear. He seems slim, long neck, dense beard and moustache (maybe chestnut).
Anybody can add some descriptions? (George Stetson, Jonas Wendell, William I. Mann, Sunderlin, Hirsh, Hoskins...)

Does anyone know where in the net I can find a plan of Allegheny?
In the divorce suit, Mrs. Russell said they moved in 1883 to Clifton Avenue. Does anyone know in which part of Allegheny is this? Where do they lived before 1883? When did Russell and the staff begin to live at Bethel (or the Bible House)?
Is there anyone here...? ;-)

Hello Sergio, I have a bit of an answer. The book Qualified to be Ministers (1st ed.), page 304, $ 10 says: In 1889 they moved to their own 4 story brick building in Allegheny (North Side, Pittsburgh). This is confirmed in jv, page 54.
In the divorce papers Maria Russell said (page 4-6) they first lived on Cedar Ave for 4 years (1879-1883), then Perryville Ave, later named McClintock Ave for one year (1883-1884), next moved to the opposite hill on Clifton Ave for 10 years (1884-1894), and finally November before Thanksgiving 1894 they moved to Arch Street.
I hope with you for more information on the list.

Thanks a lot, Ton.
In 1894 they moved to Arch Street. I guess to the Bible House?

Dear friends,One of the early regular contributors to the Watchtower (and a traveller to open the work in England) was JC Sunderlin of Fort Edwards, NY. According to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/NYWASHIN/2003-06/1054785147 he was a photographer there. He among others made a picture of AP Adams, see that thread.Ton

Bruce posted on 2/13/07 3:16 AM:

The following gives some insight into Nelson Barbour's personality. Dr. N. H. Barbour, Of Rochester, N. Y. All I have read in the papers of my city of late has been, "Shoot the mob! Crust and exterminate it at the cost of life!" This was unthinking and indefensible, born out of an entire failure to grasp the situation which calls a mob into existence. I came down from Rochester filled with thunder on this question. I find that Mr. Graves has taken my thunder al away. I agree with him perfectly on every point put forward in that masterly address this morning. He suggested as a possible remedy for the mob evil, to legalize the mob and give it legal power and responsibility. The mob has already been legalized by God Almighty. If you do not believe that, go back to the God-given Mosaic code. By this code the people in every case executed a sentence calling for death. Read Leviticus, chapter XX, "And the Lord spake unto Moses saying, he shall surely be put to death; the people of the land shall stone him with stones. "Take him from the camp and stone him." There's your mob law, given directly by God Almighty. Jesus recognized mob law. "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone>" Here was the vital principle; only a slight restriction on the original Mosaic code. Paul was the ring-leader of a mob. You do not believe that? He even held the clothes of a mob while they stoned Stephen to death. He was acting merely according to the Jewish law, which entrusted to the people as a whole the execution of the death sentence. The reason why this principle appeals strongly to me is that public sentiment in a community is right ten times where a twelve-man jury, influenced by criminal lawyers—rightly so called---seeking to line their own pockets, and if necessary, to defeat the ends of justice to do that, is uncertain and perverted. You know many cases where smooth, unscrupulous lawyers have been able to defeat justice and set free the guilty. About ten years ago I tried to get before Congress a way in which to divide the black and the white population of our country without much friction. New Mexico was then a territory. I said that the government should take this territory, let the white popu8lation remain if it desired to, but make it a state for the blacks. Let them vote in this state; choose their officers and make their laws, subject of course to the Constitution of the United States. If the negro remains in other states and votes there, let him necessarily vote for those whom the white men have nominated. I f the white man remains in this state and votes, let him be permitted to vote only for the candidates whom the blacks have nominated. In this way we will get at the whole problem and get rid of any trouble about the equality of the races. They are not equal; never can be; and there is no use going on trying to make them equal before the law or anywhere else. The Mob Spirit in America, Chautauqua Press, 1903, pages Note: Barbour supported John Temple Graves' proposal to create a "Negro State" in the West.

Question removed by ADM. Off-topic. The small 72 inches tall "pyramid" at the Watchtower Cemetery outside Pittsburgh is a marker for the entire cemetery consisting of 270+ graves. It is not a "memorial" to Charles Taze Russell. CTR's plot has its own headstone.
