Quite interesting. I would guess it is a reenactors sword if the date is correct. Are you sure of the date? Could it be 1859? By the 1890’s Maryland units generally were not volunteer infantry, but Maryland National Guard. My mistake on this matter, I didn’t pay attention to the date, 1899. The 1st MNG entered into Federal service as the 1st MD Vol infantry for the Spanish American war. My guess, you have an officer’s sword from that war.
