Are there any places to go surf fishing? Also what is caught? What bait/tackle to use? Regulations? I know there has to be a lisence? I did a lot of pier, surf and headboat fishing in the Va/Nc area. It was inexpensive and kept me out of trouble, in addition to being a heck of alotta fun! I'm working/living in the Petaluma/Novato area (hopefully temporary). I got the itch and got nothin but time. Any info will be Greatttlllly Appreciated! Thanks Leo

the fishing in north california is tough. you can catch a mess of surf perch at seacliff located just south of santacruz. the locals call this place the broken boat because there is a cement boat broken in half at the end of the pier. i like the santacruz municipal pier located at the end of the santacruz beach board walk.people catch sharks, rays, corbina"king fish", and surf perch. the best method for xl fish is to use a sabaki rig to catch live bait like anchovies and then put a live anchovie on a hook. the chovie will live longer if you hook it through the lips and gently cast. all other game fish will hit squid. you can buy all bait at santacruz pier. goodluck, write back if you get this...

You can try out on the Bodega Breakwater or at the Bodega Pier. The nice thing about both places is that you DON'T need a license. All municipal piers and breakwaters in the state are license FREE zones. Same baits as your previous responder (and shimp) work. Halibut coming soon . . . I don't know what the odds are from the breakwater. Another safe spot is Tomales bay... near the mouth for halibut. BEWARE the sleeper waves on most of the Marin and Sonoma county beaches. They make surf fishing a little risky unless it is a really calm day.
